This article explores the nature of the paradox inherent in coopetition; that is, the simultaneous pursuit of cooperation and competition between firms, and emanating tensions that develop at individual, organizational, and inter-organizational levels. We dissect the anatomy of the coopetition paradox to discover how it materializes by creating an external boundary (i.e., via unifying forces) and internal boundaries (i.e., via divergent forces). After explaining the coopetition paradox, we distinguish tension from paradox and submit that tension comprises both positive and negative emotions simultaneously, also known as emotional ambivalence. Finally, we recognize that emotional ambivalence in coopetition prevails at different levels, and vary in its level of intensity and persistency in relation to different contexts. We employ illustrative cases to ground our propositions empirically. This article provides understanding on concepts, expects to incite fruitful dialogue, and fuels further studies on inter-firm paradoxes. 相似文献

Innovation portfolio management (IPM) is a dynamic decision‐making process, in which projects are evaluated and selected, and resources are allocated. Previous research has developed an understanding of IPM success and its influencing factors. However, little research investigated the quality of the decision‐making process and the ability to quickly adapt the portfolio. This study focuses on the antecedents of decision‐making quality and agility (i.e., responsiveness to changes in the environment). Based on a decision‐making framework, five structural and cultural IPM components are derived as important antecedents of decision‐making quality, which in turn influences agility. The structural components (1) clarity of strategic goals, (2) formality of the IPM processes, and (3) controlling intensity serve a coordinating function. The cultural components (4) innovation climate and (5) risk climate serve a motivating function in IPM. An analysis of a sample of 179 firms and their innovation portfolios through structural equation modeling using a double‐informant design documents that these five components all positively influence portfolio decision‐making quality, which in turn positively influences agility. Results further show that environmental turbulence moderates some of these relationships. While the positive effect of process formality is weakened under increasing turbulence, the effects of controlling intensity and climate for innovation are strengthened by environmental turbulence. The findings have theoretical implications for the understanding of IPM as a dynamic capability and practical implications for the management of portfolios in turbulent environments. 相似文献

It has long been recognized that there is a tradeoff between exploration and exploitation. How organizations utilize resources
across time and space will affect firm survival and growth. In this paper, we examine resource utilization and performance
implications over time in an environment undergoing fundamental institutional transformation. Based on a large archive of
Chinese government data from 1988, 1992, and 1996, the study finds that (1) the impact of resource utilization is contingent
on the degree to which different resources are committed to factors of production, (2) the impact is curvilinear and only
valid within an “optimal” range, and (3) the performance implications change over time. As firms enter later stages of the
transitional process, efficiency becomes less important as they shift their strategic focus from exploitation to exploration,
which requires more flexibility. These findings have significant bearing on the issue of upgrading technological competitiveness
in China as the country becomes increasingly integrated in the global economy. Such insights may also have implications for
other emerging economies in Asia.

In spite of the recognition that career politics, and therefore ingratiation, is widely used to manage careers, there is a dearth of empirical studies on ingratiation as a career management strategy. Consistent with Ferris and Kacmar's (1988) suggestion, the study reported here investigated the conditions (defined by situational variables, career concerns and personality variables) under which ingratiation is used as a career management strategy. Data were obtained through a structured questionnaire from professional employees (N = 214) in public and private sector organizations in Singapore. Factor analysis of the 21-item career concerns scale revealed four solutions representing internal and external career concerns. The results of the hierarchical regression revealed that situational variables explained most of the variance in ingratiation, followed by career concerns and personality variables. Among the individual variables, task ambiguity, supervisor reward power, managerial responsibility and need for achievement were significant while personal success approached significance. Internal career concern of autonomy development was unrelated to ingratiation. Of the interaction terms, only supervisor reward power and Machiavellianism approached significance. Selecting the right partner is important for the success of alliances and joint ventures. For international joint ventures
(IJVs) from diverse cultures the partner selection process can become complicated. Prior studies have investigated the alliances
and joint ventures to develop a set of objective criteria for evaluating potential partners. This paper reports the study
of IJVs formed by Singapore firms in Peoples Republic of China and India. The intent was to develop a methodology for identifying
partner selection criteria in a cross-cultural setting. The findings reveal that the partner selection process follows a different
logic in Confucian societies. Trust has been established to be essential for developing enduring co-operative relationships.
The paper explores the concept of trust in relation to commitment and control in the context of the Confucian culture. We
discover that trust is critical to partner selection. Cultural differences do not significantly alter the partner selection
criteria for Singapore firms. Results support the view that while Chinese may depend on networks for social solidarity, social
trust does extends beyond the family and is necessary for harmonious and successful joint ventures. 相似文献
