Highly risk-averse retirees are generally advised to adopt a fixed spending strategy such as the 4% withdrawal rule. To prevent the premature depletion of a retirement portfolio, the rule attempts to proxy as the ‘safe withdrawal rate’. But a constant withdrawal rate means that retirees accumulate unspent surpluses when markets outperform and face spending shortfalls when markets underperform. While a safe withdrawal rate can prevent spending shortfalls, the opportunity cost of unspent surpluses associated with this strategy can be extreme. We apply a range of basic investment decision rules to a retirement portfolio applying various withdrawal rates and examine the probability of shortfalls over a retirement horizon. Using a block bootstrap simulation technique, we examine decision rules relating to stock and bond investments. Our results show that retirement portfolios with a bias towards stocks coupled with a decision rule that sources withdrawals from bonds and cash before stocks significantly outperforms alternative withdrawal strategies, despite the inherent increase in volatility. This finding is in direct contrast to the safe withdrawal rate conventions used in contemporary financial advice models. 相似文献

Earlier studies of the seigniorage inflation model have found that the high-inflation steady state is not stable under learning. We reconsider this issue and analyze the full set of solutions for the linearized model. Our main focus is on stationary hyperinflationary paths near the high-inflation steady state. These paths are shown to be stable under least-squares learning if agents can utilize contemporaneous data. In an economy with a mixture of agents, some of whom only have access to lagged data, stable hyperinflationary paths emerge only if the proportion of agents with access to contemporaneous data is sufficiently high. 相似文献

We study the no-arbitrage theory of voluntary disclosure (Dye, J Account Res 23:123–145, 1985, and Ostaszewski and Gietzmann, Rev Quant Financ Account 31: 1–27, 2008), generalized to the setting of $n$ firms, simultaneously and voluntarily, releasing at the interim-report date ‘partial’ information concerning their ‘common operating conditions’. Each of the firms has, as in the Dye model, some (known) probability of observing a signal of their end of period performance, but here this signal includes noise determined by a firm-specific precision parameter. The co-dependency of the firms results entirely from their common operating conditions. Each firm has a disclosure cutoff, which is a best response to the cutoffs employed by the remaining firms. To characterize these equilibrium cutoffs explicitly, we introduce $n$ new hypothetical firms, related to the corresponding actual firms, which are operationally independent, but are assigned refined precision parameters and amended means. This impounds all existing correlations arising from conditioning on the other potentially available sources of information. In the model the actual firms’ equilibrium cutoffs are geometric weighted averages of these hypothetical firms. We uncover two countervailing effects. Firstly, there is a bandwagon effect, whereby the presence of other firms raises each individual cutoff relative to what it would have been in the absence of other firms. This article presents a dynamic demand model for motor vehicles. This approach accounts for the change in the mix of consumers over the model year and measures consumers' substitution patterns across products and time. I find intertemporal substitution is significant; consumers are more likely to change the timing of their purchase in reaction to a price increase rather than buy another vehicle in the same period. Further, I find automakers' use of large cash‐back rebates at the end of the model year, although boosting overall sales, induces large numbers of consumers to delay their purchases and so pay lower prices. 相似文献

The Gompertz distribution is widely used to describe the distribution of adult deaths. Previous works concentrated on formulating approximate relationships to characterise it. However, using the generalised integro-exponential function, exact formulas can be derived for its moment-generating function and central moments. Based on the exact central moments, higher accuracy approximations can be defined for them. In demographic or actuarial applications, maximum likelihood estimation is often used to determine the parameters of the Gompertz distribution. By solving the maximum likelihood estimates analytically, the dimension of the optimisation problem can be reduced to one both in the case of discrete and continuous data. Monte Carlo experiments show that by ML estimation, higher accuracy estimates can be acquired than by the method of moments. 相似文献

In the mid‐1980s, financial economists began building option‐based models to value corporate investments in real assets, laying the foundation for an extensive academic literature in this area. The 1990s saw several books, numerous conferences, and many articles aimed at corporate practitioners, who began to experiment with these techniques. Now, as we approach the end of 2001, the real options approach to valuing real investments has established a solid, albeit limited, foothold in the corporate world. Based on their recent interviews with 39 individuals from 34 companies in seven different industries, the authors of this article attempt to answer the question, “How is real options being practiced, and what impact is it having in the corporate setting?” The article identifies three main corporate uses of real options—as a strategic way of thinking, an analytical valuation tool, and an organization‐wide process for evaluating, monitoring, and managing capital investments. For example, in some companies, real options is used as an input into an M&A process in which rigorous numerical analysis plays only a small role. In such cases, real options contributes as a qualitative way of thinking, with little formality either in terms of analytical rigor or organizational procedure. In other firms, real options is used in a commodity trading environment where options are clearly specified in contracts and simply need to be valued. In this case, real options functions as an analytical tool, though generally only in specialized areas of the firm and not on an organization‐wide basis. In still other companies, real options is used in a technology or R&D context where the firm's success is driven by identifying and managing potential sources of flexibility. In such cases, real options functions as an organization‐wide process with both a broad conceptual and analytical core. The companies that have shown the greatest interest in real options generally operate in industries where large investments with uncertain returns are commonplace, such as oil and gas, and life sciences. Major applications include the evaluation of exploration and production investments in oil and gas firms, generation plant investments in power firms, R&D portfolios in pharmaceutical and biotech firms, and technology investment portfolios in high‐tech firms. While the approaches to implementation are quite varied, there appears to be a common path to the successful adoption of real options. The key steps of the adoption process are: (1) conducting pilot projects; (2) getting buy‐in from senior‐level and rank‐and‐file managers; (3) codifying real options through expert working groups, specialist training, and customization; and (4) institutionalizing and integrating real options firm‐wide. After citing best practices for each of these four steps, the authors close by predicting that a “network” effect and acceptance by Wall Street will serve as catalysts for more widespread corporate use of real options. 相似文献

Industrial Policy and Technology Diffusion: Evidence from Paper Making Machinery in Indonesia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, we analyze the diffusion and adoption of paper making machinery in the Indonesian pulp and paper industry, from 1923 till 2000. We develop a machine level index of technological sophistication (mach), which measures the technological distance of each paper machine to the world technological frontier. The data reveal a pattern of rapid technological catch up. But catch up was not an industrywide phenomenon. Some modern firms installed state-of-the-art machinery, while others installed older vintages. The paper argues that industrial policy has played an important role in the speed and nature of diffusion of paper making machinery. 相似文献

Using an establishment‐level panel dataset for the Malaysian manufacturing industries for 2000–2004, we argue that differences in the proxies and degrees of foreign shareholdings in measuring foreign presence lead to opposite signs and/or significance of spillover effects. The results show significant evidence of positive productivity spillovers to local establishments in the same industry, based on a broad measure of foreign presence. However, there is no evidence of positive spillover when employment share is used as a proxy for foreign presence. Furthermore, significant negative spillover effects are related to higher employment shares of wholly foreign‐owned establishments. Although there is no significant difference in labor productivity between wholly foreign‐owned and locally‐owned establishments, both majority and minority foreign‐owned establishments have significantly lower levels of labor productivity than locally‐owned establishments in Malaysia. 相似文献
