AN INPUT-OUTPUT VIEW OF AGRICULTURE IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Despite the dependence of the economy of Papua New Guinea upon plantation and smallholder agriculture, little has been known of the inter-relationships which exist between agriculture and the remainder of the economy, or of the changes which would follow from implementation of the official development programme. In this article, a recently completed input-output table is used to quantify these relationships in 1970 and to project changes over the period to 1978.     

The application of a graph-partitioning algorithm to the scheduling of curriculum requirements

In this paper we consider a problem involving the scheduling of courses to academic terms in order that curriculum requirements be satisfied. The problem is converted to one in which a set of sub-graphs of a complete graph are sought which are of maximal total edge weight. A previously developed algorithm is modified to treat the problem such that a step-by-step procedure is given and demonstrated. Computational experience with the algorithm is discussed.

The DataLab of the Australian Bureau of Statistics

Over and above the current multitude of licensed micro‐level datasets that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provides for research purposes, the ABS has expanded its support to include the new DataLab protected research environment to allow unparalleled access to Australia's valuable micro‐level research datasets. The environment is highly protected by multiple layers of data security but allows access to unprecedented levels of data detail in real‐time to datasets such as the 2006–2011 linked census (ACLD), the ABS firm survey and tax panel (BLADE) and linked census and administrative data (MADIP).     

In our ivory towers? The research-practice gap in management accounting

This study reports on an investigation of 64 senior management accounting academics from 55 universities in 14 countries about the extent to which academic management accounting research does, and should inform practice. Drawing on the diffusion of innovations theory as a point of departure, and based on evidence obtained from a questionnaire survey and subsequent interviews, our findings reveal the prevalence of two broad schools of thought. One school, represented by the majority of senior academics, holds that there is a significant and widening ‘gap’ between academic research and the practice of management accounting, and that this gap is of considerable concern. In contrast, the other school holds that a divide between academic management accounting research and practice is appropriate, and that efforts to bridge this divide are unnecessary, untenable or irrelevant. From this empirical evidence, we advance a conceptual framework distinguishing between the ‘type’ of academic research undertaken, and the ‘users’ of academic research, and on the basis of this framework, contend that framing the relationship between academic research and practice as a ‘gap’ is potentially an oversimplification, and directs attention away from the broader but fundamental question of the role and societal relevance of academic research in management accounting.     

Deceptive Impression Management: Does Deception Pay in Established Workplace Relationships?

We examine deceptive impression management’s effect on a supervisor’s ratings of promotability and relationship quality (i.e., leader–member exchange) via the mediating role of the supervisor’s recognition of deception. Extending ego depletion theory using social information processing theory, we argue that deceptive impression management in a supervisor-subordinate relationship is difficult to accomplish and the degree that deception is detected will negatively impact desired outcomes. Data collected from a matched sample of 171 public sector employees and their supervisors supported this model and indicated that recognition fully mediated the negative relationships between deceptive impression management with supervisor’s rating of promotability and relationship quality.
