Within the context of a social systems approach, the author first presents a typology of consumer problems and consumer policies.Consumer problems are characterized at five levels as functional or structural. Functional problems can be solved by policies directed at the individual consumer, groups of consumers, or individual firms. Structural problems can be solved by policies directed at the general framework within which consumers make their decisions.Three paradigms are then presented which — each in a different way — highlight the social and political influence of consumers, thus providing alternative rationales for solving functional and structural problems.Finally, the main results of an empirical study are presented, showing how the three paradigms are used as guidelines for organized consumer action in Denmark. The author concludes that only two of the three paradigms should — in a complementary fashion — be considered relevant guidelines for consumer action.
Die Bedeutung alternativer Paradigmata als Leitlinien für Verbraucherpolitik und kollektive Verbraucheraktionen
Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag faßt Verbraucherprobleme als Einschränkungen der Bedürfnisbefriedigung von Konsumenten vor, während und nach dem Kauf auf und beginnt mit einer Typologie von Verbraucherproblemen, die in erster Linie funktionelle und strukturelle Probleme unterscheidet. Funktionelle Probleme entstehen durch Informationsmängel oder durch Störungen in der Kommunikation zwischen Konsumenten und Produzenten, können sich aber auch aus bestimmten Marketingpraktiken der Anbieter ergeben. Solche Probleme können durch Maßnahmen gelöst werden, die sich an einzelne Konsumenten, Gruppen von Konsumenten oder an einzelne Firmen richten. Strukturelle Probleme werden durch Bedingungen hervorgerufen, an die sich Konsumenten kurzfristig anpassen müssen. Im Unterschied zu funktionellen Problemen sind sie eher genereller Natur. Sie können durch Maßnahmen gelöst werden, die sich an ganze Branchen, an Verbände, Arbeitnehmerorganisationen oder an politisch Tätige wenden, und sind in der Regel das Ergebnis kollektiver Entscheidungsprozesse oder kollektiven Handelns der Konsumenten.Zur Beurteilung der Notwendigkeit verbraucherpolitischer Maßnahmen bietet die einschlägige Literatur drei verschiedene Grundpositionen an, nämlich erstens das Paradigma der verbraucherkontrollierten Produktion (dieses Paradigma kann Verbraucherpolitik nicht rechtfertigen und muß in einer Politik des laissez-faire die beste Lösung von Verbraucherproblemen sehen), zweitens das Paradigma der Interdependenz von Konsum und Produktion (es liefert einige Begründungen für verbraucherpolitische Maßnahmen vor allem zur Überwindung von Informationslücken und zur Marktpflege) und schließlich das Paradigma des produzentenkontrollierten Verbrauchs (es rechtfertigt insbesondere verbraucherpolitische Maßnahmen, die sich mit solchen Verbraucherproblemen beschäftigen, deren Lösung nicht im Produzenten-Interesse liegt).Eine Studie des Autors in Dänemark zeigt, daß die Verbraucherbewegung dieses Landes vorrangig vom Paradigma der Interdependenz von Konsum und Produktion geleitet wird und daß die Resourcen vorrangig zur Lösung funktioneller Probleme verwendet werden. Wesentliche Schlußfolgerung des Autors ist, daß das Paradigma des produzentenkontrollierten Verbrauchs ebenso als Leitlinie herangezogen werden sollte. Die beiden Paradigmata schließen sich nicht gegeneinander aus, sondern sollten als wechselseitige Ergänzung aufgefaßt werden.

Customer satisfaction and customer loyalty is becoming an increasingly important factor in modern retailing—a market characterized by slow growth and intense competition. Big non-European chains such as Walmart are already present in some countries and consider buying some of the retail chains in other countries, e.g. in the Scandinavian countries. This development will demand even more focus on customer satisfaction and customer loyalty in order to stay in business and may also demand that existing actors on the market place form new coalitions. Promising new partners may be identified, partly based upon measures identifying how potential partners are perceived by the customers. Based on results from the European Customer Satisfaction study, a comparative analysis of customer satisfaction in Europe is conducted. Some specific Danish results are shown and the relationship between customer loyalty, supermarket type and ownership structure is studied. The relationship between results after taxes and customer loyalty is documented.  相似文献

Urban sprawl has a negative relationship with regional health outcomes, such as high obesity and chronic diseases related to physical inactivity. At the same time, literature has shown that walkable built environments are connected to lower obesity rates and increased physical activity. Less understood is the association of modal diversity with those health outcomes. This research studies a range of public health outcomes to determine their associations with commute mode diversity. Researchers adapted the methodology of urban sociologists Harvey Molotch and Richard Appelbaum to explore twelve different health measures in 148 US counties and their metropolitan statistical areas. The test measure is the percentage of commuters who use some means other than a single-occupant vehicle (SOV). The percentage of such commuters ranges from as low as 11% in Houston County, Alabama to as high as 36% in Honolulu County, Hawaii. Using bivariate and multivariate analyses, we found better health outcomes in counties and metropolitan areas that have fewer workers commuting by SOV. These findings underscore the positive impact of sustainable transportation policies on community health and open up a new direction for public health research and the built environment.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the properties of the Lagrange Multiplier [LM] test for autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (ARCH) and generalized ARCH (GARCH) in the presence of additive outliers (AOs). We show analytically that both the asymptotic size and power are adversely affected if AOs are neglected: the test rejects the null hypothesis of homoscedasticity too often when it is in fact true, while the test has difficulty detecting genuine GARCH effects. Several Monte Carlo experiments show that these phenomena occur in small samples as well. We design and implement a robust test, which has better size and power properties than the conventional test in the presence of AOs. We apply the tests to a number of US macroeconomic time series, which illustrates the dangers involved when nonrobust tests for ARCH are routinely applied as diagnostic tests for misspecification. In this paper we test a particular form of interdependent behaviour, namely the hypothesis that individuals' choices of hours of work are influenced by the average hours of work in a social reference group. There are problems in empirically disentangling the effects of interdependent behaviour and preference variation across groups. We show that panel data or data from several points in time are needed. In the empirical analysis we combine cross-section data from 1973, 1980, and 1990. Our results support the hypothesis of interdependent behaviour. The implication is that conventional tax policy predictions, in which preference interdependencies are neglected, will tend to underestimate the effect of a tax reform on hours of work. Our point estimates suggest that conventional calculations would capture only about a third of the actual change in hours of work. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Conscious parallelism refers to collusive forms of parallel pricing in oligopoly. In this paper, four distinct pricing methods which all impose some form of parallel conduct are analysed. The pricing methods maximize joint profits if, and only if, firms are symmetric. With asymmetries in cost, total gains from collusion are reduced and absolute and relative collusive gains differ between firms. For many collusive optima, low‐cost firms have only little to gain from conscious parallelism. This is particularly the case when the degree of product homogeneity is high.  相似文献

The circuit of value outlined in the second volume of Marx's Capital provides a coherent framework for the characterization of macroeconomic phenomena from a classical perspective. This paper builds on Foley's (Journal of Economic Theory, 28 (1982), pp. 300–319) formal reconstruction of the circuit to derive estimable forms for its three critical mechanisms: the production, realization and recommittal lags. The entire model is then estimated for the United States over the period 1948–89 on the basis of the Shaikh and Tonak (Measuring the Wealth of Nations: The Political Economy of National Accounts, Cambridge University Press, New York, 1995) data set, and the results are used to explore a number of current controversies, including (on the basis of simulation exercises) the consequence of various deficit reduction proposals.  相似文献
