From sending to host societies: immigration in Greece,Ireland and Spain in the 21st century

In a relatively short period of time, new immigration patterns have changed the geography of immigration of the EU15, bringing three old emigration countries, Ireland, Spain and Greece, to the forefront of the new immigration wave. This article studies the analogies and differences of the recent immigration experience of this group of countries, focusing on the demographic characteristics of the immigrants (origin, sex, gender and education), labour market insertion (wages, labour market segregation and quality of matching) and overall economic performance in terms of poverty rates.

Employee involvement in ideation and healthcare service innovation quality

ABSTRACT

This study hypothesizes and empirically tests the influence of involvement of (1) frontline employees and (2) top managers in ideation process on healthcare service innovation quality. Based on data from 168 service innovation projects in Dutch healthcare organizations, the empirical results indicate that frontline employee involvement and top management involvement in, respectively, idea generation and idea application both improve the quality of healthcare service innovation. We find that the positive effect of frontline employee involvement is stronger under the condition of higher service innovativeness. In the direct relationship of top management involvement and healthcare service innovation quality, our data do not show such a moderating effect. The key and general managerial implication of the findings is that healthcare organizations are inspired to involve frontline employees in the idea generation processes and involve top managers in the idea application processes of service innovation projects, in order to improve innovation quality.     

耗散理论视域下我国特大城市产业结构生态化转型研究

以生态文明建设为出发点,针对我国特大城市产业结构实际,以北京市为例,从耗散结构角度分析了北京市产业结构系统的困境,以及造成北京市产业结构失衡的熵增因素,提出产业结构生态化是特大城市未来产业结构演化方向。基于生态城市产业发展相关理论,结合耗散结构理论,提出通过引入含有负熵流的生态化政策与技术,如大力发展新兴产业、培养高新技术人才等,引起城市产业结构涨落,形成新的稳定结构,是我国特大城市产业结构生态化转型的重要解决途径。     

人民币汇率变动与我国劳动力就业

随着人民币汇率逐步走高,汇率与我国劳动力就业之间的关系也引起学界更多的关注。研究表明,人民币汇率走高将会加大我国劳动力就业的压力,但这种影响是由国际贸易、国际投资以及消费模式间接传导出来的,并因为国际贸易、国际投资与消费之间的互动关系,而进一步加大。应将稳定就业甚至适度扩大就业作为我们调整人民币汇率的一个利益出发点,从三个中间变量着手,尽可能降低人民币升值所带来的就业负效应。

Are traditional timing models well specified?

Traditional timing models are affected by several biases, which generate spurious timing and stock-picking coefficients. Academics have appointed different causes as the possible sources of these biases. A negative correlation between timing and stock-picking abilities arises as a consequence of the biases in traditional timing models. This article provides evidence for one bias commonly found in traditional timing models, which is related with options. We focus on this bias in view of the scant attention it has so far received in the literature. We believe one possible cause for this bias is the failure to include the cost of the option implicit in timing activities in the timing models, and on this basis, we opt for a corrected version of the Merton and Henriksson model (1981 Merton, RC and Henriksson, RD. 1981. This study therefore is a pioneer in the assessment of the magnitude of this bias and in the measurement of the impact of its correction on fund managers’ results. Our results confirm both the existence of the bias and the correction of the problem when the cost of the option is included in timing models. The modified version of the Merton and Henriksson model, unlike the traditional model, reports positive timing and stock-picking coefficients, supporting the good performance by managers.
