This paper reviews the basic principles of inequality measurement, underlining the advantages and shortcomings of alternative measures from a theoretical standpoint and in the context of the study of the distribution of wealth. Adopting the two most popular measures, the Gini index and the P‐shares, the paper documents wealth inequality in Canada using the 1999, 2005 and 2012 Survey of Financial Security (SFS). It carries out several decompositions with covariates, featuring DFL‐type reweighting methods and Gini and P‐shares RIF regressions. The latter parallel decompositions deepen our understanding of how changes in socio‐demographic characteristics, including the compensating role of family formation and human capital, impact wealth inequality. 相似文献

This paper examines a competitive intertemporal market for bankable emission permits, such as sulfur dioxide allowances. Without profit regulation, firms are willing to bank permits if permit prices rise over time with the rate of interest, but will not bank if prices rise more slowly.The market achieves aggregate emission targets at least total cost if there is no profit regulation, but may not do so if firms are subject to profit regulation. Firms must arbitrage differences both in abatement cost and in the regulatory treatment of permits to achieve least total cost.The impetus for this work came from research we initiated during the Summer of 1990 for the Energy Information Agency. Following the approach of the classic 1974 marital-role influence study of Davis and Rigaux, the present study focuses on
differences in decision making (i.e., joint, husband dominated, wife dominated) across 24 product categories as a function
of two key factors. These factors are stage of the decision process (i.e., problem recognition, information search, and the
final decision) and culture (People’s Republic of China and the United States). The Jacobson Marital-Role Egalitarianism Scale
is included to further assess individual differences in husband and wife traditionality-modernism. The major findings are
that emphasis on joint, husband-dominated, and wife-dominated decisions vary by stage and by stage-culture interaction. Practical
implications are presented with suggestions for future research.

This paper compares the number of consumer information cues found in television advertisements in three countries: Australia,
Ecuador, and the United States. Earlier studies conducted by Resnick and Stern in the United States and Dowling in Australia
were replicated in Ecuador. Content analysis of 108 Ecuadorian television advertisements evaluated the number and types of
information cues in each commercial. Results indicate that a much greater proportion of Ecuadorian television commercials
contain consumer information cues than those broadcast in the other two countries. The explanation suggested for this observation
is that Ecuador, due to its level of economic development, has many more products in the introductory stages of the product
life cycle. This situation, in turn, requires more extensive communication of consumer information to market the products
effectively. This finding implies an additional dimension, information content level, which must be considered when adapting

We examine the change of the gender wage gap in Austria between 2002 and 2007 using Juhn et al. (Workers and their wages, AEI Press, Washington DC, pp 107–143, 1991) decomposition. We analyze data from Austrian tax records which we merge with social security records and Austrian micro-censuses of the years 2002 and 2007. We find that the gender wage gap declined from 21 % in 2002 to 18 % in 2007. The main determinant of this decline is the relative improvement of women’s unobserved characteristics. The decline of the gender wage gap is also due to women having attained more formal education and to a convergence of men’s and women’s returns to education. Women’s improved educational attainments were partly offset by a shift in the demand for skilled workers that disadvantaged unskilled workers, most of whom are women, resulting in a moderate decrease of the gender pay gap over these years. We investigate the impact of housing wealth, credit availability and financial distress on college enrolment decisions. We find that housing wealth is negatively related to enrolment in public schools and positively related to enrolment in private schools. The development of optimal human resource practices is often contingent on the accurate statistical testing of potential interventions. Testing the efficacy of HR interventions can be enhanced by taking additional measures to improve statistical power, but the traditional means of increasing power through sample size are often beyond the cost and ability of HR professionals to pursue. This article, therefore, focuses on measurement procedures as an alternative way to increase statistical power for detecting HR intervention effects.
