Comparing bank concentration across countries

Cross-country comparisons of traditional measures of concentration, such as the Herfindahl index, are of limited use for answering normative questions such as: ‘Is the banking system too concentrated in our country?’ This paper develops a measure of concentration, essentially by normalising the Herfindahl index by a minimum feasible value for that index based on market size for each country. A formal derivation is given, and the measure is related to the mark-up of price over marginal cost for banking services. The empirical implications of the new measure are illustrated by reference to some recent studies.     

CLOTHING,AMBIENT TEMPERATURE AND COMFORT – I

Male and female students prefer much the same ambient temperature in their study-bedrooms but it is noticeable that men wear significantly more clothing than women. The same is true of Japanese students even though the preferred temperature is lower than the English students find comfortable. Overseas students of recent arrival in England tend to keep their rooms at the same temperature as the English students but wear more clothing. After a longer period in England these overseas students wear less clothing but keep their rooms significantly warmer.     

Gains in efficiency from joint estimation of systems of autoregressive-moving average processes

The paper examines gains in efficiency from joint estimation of systems of ARMA processes where cross-correlation is due to contemporaneous correlation among disturbances. The asymptotic variance of joint estimates is derived and it involves only variances and covariances among purely AR processes corresponding to the AR and MA parts of the constituent processes. Small sample gains are evaluated by Monte Carlo methods. Application of joint estimation to two short-term interest rates is shown to result in more accurate post-sample predictions relative to both univariate models and the FMP econometric model.     

Social roles, human capital, and the intrahousehold division of labor: evidence from Pakistan

Using detailed data from rural Pakistan, this paper investigateswhether human capital, learning-by-doing, gender, and familystatus affect the division of labor within households. Resultssuggest the presence of returns to individual specializationin all farm, non-farm, and home based activities. The intrahouseholddivision of labor is influenced by comparative advantage basedon human capital and by long-lasting returns to learning-by-doing,but we also find evidence of a separate effect of gender andfamily status. Households seem to operate as hierarchies withsexually segregated spheres of activity. The head of householdand his or her spouse provide most of the labor within theirrespective spheres of influence; other members work less. Whenpresent in the household, daughters-in-law work systematicallyharder than daughters of comparable age, height, and education.Other findings of interest are that there are increasing returnsto scale in most household chores, that larger households workmore off farm, and that better educated individuals enjoy moreleisure.     

Comparison of the mortality between ischemia and frequent premature ventricular contractions on an exercise test

Ischemia on an exercise test (ET) is a known risk factor for cardiovascular mortality. However, the magnitude of risk of frequent premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) on ET is often overlooked. This analysis reveals that the quantitative additional mortality risk on ET presented by frequent PVCs is similar to ischemia.
