What are You Mixed with: the Effect of Multiracial Identification on Perceived Attractiveness

Studies consistently show that attractiveness is racialized, and in a racial hierarchy that privileges whites at the expense of blacks, white phenotypic characteristics are deemed more attractive than black phenotypic characteristics. This study seeks to examine whether the racialized nature of attractiveness is based on more than just appearance. To that end, I use Add Health data to analyze whether black people who identify as mixed race rather than as a single race are perceived as more attractive even when controlling for phenotype, particularly skin tone, eye color, and hair color.     

Business and the civil society: The missing dialectic

The positive social impact of global commerce on an increasingly interdependent world is challenged by civil society. A diversely supported backlash threatens political restrictions on the free market paradigm and loss of globalization's momentum. Opposition is documented in the historical record and an expanding base of critical literature. The power balance of the three components of society‐political, economic and civil is in flux. Business's only stabilizing strategy is to acknowledge and act on its commensurate social responsibility. Optimism is found in a minority of individual business actions, however the speed with which the majority will adapt is crucial. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Structural adjustment in the Latin American and African mobile sectors

In recent times, there has been much discussion about structural changes taking place on the mobile front in Europe and the USA but rather little on developments elsewhere. However, it is in Latin America and Africa where the structure of the mobile sector has recently been undergoing the most rapid and unprecedented change. This paper sets out to explain what has happened in each case covering the period to end-2005, to explain the underlying rationale and to seek finally to answer the question whether there is a common pattern in both cases or whether they are essentially independent.     

Can you market God? A case study of the ‘God Speaks’ social marketing campaign

• Public service campaigns, spanning more than 60 years and thousands of mass media advertisements, have asked individuals to take actions such as “Say No to Drugs” and “Keep America Beautiful,” as well as to support various nonprofit organizations. A case study of the “God Speaks” religious social marketing campaign is offered as an example of a non-traditional campaign that provides insights for future endeavors. Although the campaign, which began as a local paid media effort, appeared to have little measurable impact on attitudes and behavior, it was able to generate extensive non-paid media coverage that greatly increased its reach.

Mapping worldwide mobile networks: Some problems and indicative solutions

Mobile telecommunications is a global and complex industry containing many actors. However, relatively little research has been undertaken into explaining its structure. With this in mind, the objective of this paper is twofold: first, to map the structure of the mobile telecommunications industry and, second, to use this mapping exercise to highlight the data collection issues that are frequently encountered. Through outlining one particular approach to data collection, the paper argues that researchers need to be careful when constructing datasets and wary when relying on those provided by others. By mapping the structure of the mobile industry, the paper highlights a series of key issues in data collection and trends in operator and market structure.     

The End of the Line for British Rail

The privatization of British Rail is now effectively complete, although criticisms directed at the outcome are extensive. This article examines the National Audit Office's work on rail privatization, and looks at problems highlighted by various pressure groups. It is argued that the new system has been going through its teething stages, and that many of the most obvious deficiencies are being addressed. The longer-term outlook is therefore reasonably positive.
