This article critically examines some of the most common arguments used to support the view that Fair Trade should be rejected by consumers and businesses seeking to socialise their economic decisions. Overall the paper finds that the majority of such criticisms lack evidential rigour and sophisticated theory but instead rely on a high degree of rhetorical aptitude. While this does not naturally lead to the position that Fair Trade is necessarily beneficial, the conclusion reflects on a substantial amount of positive evidence to suggest that Fair Trade should not be abandoned by consumers or businesses.  相似文献

This study investigates the impact of changes to the New Zealand Exchange's listing rules and legislative amendments to the Securities Markets Act 1988 enacted in December 2002. The reforms provided statutory backing for a more stringent disclosure regime. We find evidence that non-dual listed firms, not subject to any prior enhanced disclosure regime, released more earnings-related information to the market in the post-reform period and announced their half-year and fiscal year-end results in a more timely manner. Our results also show that analysts' earnings forecast errors did not decline but analysts' forecasts showed less dispersion in the post-reform period. In respect of informational efficiency, we find evidence of a smaller abnormal return around the half-year and fiscal year earnings announcement date in the post-reform period. Our results suggest that the reforms improved the flow of information to investors, consistent with their intent.  相似文献

Econometric estimation of enterprise input use and production costs offers a less expensive alternative to special surveys. Estimates of input allocation are of use within programming models, for policy analysis and income forecasting. However, simple ordinary least squares estimation has been plagued by a number of problems and the results have been disappointing. This paper provides some empirical evidence on the extent to which these problems can be overcome, or at least mitigated, through exploitation of panel data sets and appropriate panel data estimation techniques. The results confirm that this approach provides some improvement in estimation results, but some practical and methodological problems remain.  相似文献

Judging from their profit trends, new technology-based firms have not been very successful in Norway. After ten or more years of activity, fewer than half a dozen has accumulated profits over £1 million. Those that risked large initial investments in order to standardize an innovative new technology enjoyed the greatest amount of success. Most firms were able to develop a prototype, but many had great difficulties gearing up for production. Insufficient financing and know-how were the main problems. Firms have had more problems with production than with marketing, but very few seem prepared for the costs and challenges of an international marketing effort. Most lacked a clear marketing strategy or business plan. Financing was often a problem: there was little private investment, and equity capital was often scarce with a mean debt to equity ratio of less than 30%. Most firms received some sort of public funding, usually in support of product development, but so far it has had little impact on profit trends. A multi-national follow-up study with access to a larger data base would provide many more insights.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper contends that a range of questions arising from the geographical and organizational dynamics of international retail joint ventures have been bypassed by studies in the international retail field. It argues that, despite its importance as a corporate growth strategy, comparatively less is known about the way in which retailers have employed joint ventures in international markets. Based on a review of the literature and illustrated with examples of international retail joint venturing activity, this paper reveals several gaps in our understanding of the internationalization process of retail firms. Suggestions for further research are made throughout the paper on the basis of gaps in the retailer internationalization literature.  相似文献

We develop a microstructure model that, in contrast to previousmodels, allows one to estimate the frequency and quality ofprivate information. In addition, the model produces stationaryasset price and trading volume series. We find evidence thatinformation arrives frequently within a day and that this informationis of high quality. The frequent arrival of information, whilein contrast to previous microstructure model estimates, accordswith nonmodel-based estimates and the related literature testingthe mixture-of-distributions hypothesis. To determine if theestimates are correctly reflecting the arrival of latent information,we estimate the parameters over half-hour intervals within theday. Comparison of the parameter estimates with measures ofpersistent price changes reveals that the estimates reflectthe arrival of latent information.  相似文献

This study reviewed 333 articles on China's tourism from 96 English‐language academic journals within and outside of tourism from 1978 to 2012. Tourism policy and impacts, and tourism industry development and promotion were the two predominant research themes. Tourism development, policy, ecological impacts, attractions and markets were the five most popular topics. On the basis of an authorship relationship analysis, three research networks were producing most of the China tourism research output in English. A majority of the authors were based in Mainland China, the USA and Hong Kong. Trends and gaps in the literature on China's tourism were identified. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper investigates the relationship between the list and sale price of residential properties over the housing cycle. In down or normal markets the list price generally exceeds the sales price; however, when the housing market is strong, homes sell for more than their list price. This observation is not consistent with the assumptions made in the standard model of home sellers’ search behavior. We consider alternative models. In one, sellers set list prices based on their expectations of future changes in sales prices and the arrival rate of buyers; however, demand shocks occur. This model partially explains our data from the Belfast, U.K. housing market, but it fails to predict the list to sales price ratio during a sustained housing boom. We next describe a model where sellers’ endogenously select their search mechanism depending on the strength of the housing market. We find support for the conjecture that sellers switch to an auction-like model during housing booms. There also is evidence that during a downturn in the market, sellers’ list prices are sticky.  相似文献

A globalised knowledge economy has seen organisations restructure their delivery of customer services to take advantage of an open and competitive labour market. Gains achieved in developed economies such as the USA and UK from offshoring of business processes to developing countries are pressuring Australian businesses to offshore. This paper explores the practices of Australian businesses with offshore contact centres and considers emerging trends in offshoring in terms of potential risks and benefits for Australian organisations with broad customer contact. Findings suggest that Australian organisations are not only cautiously adopting offshore contact centre solutions to a range of onshore challenges including recruitment and retention of local staff and comparatively high local costs, but also achieving gains beyond cost savings in quality of service and enhanced business flexibility.  相似文献
