Jumping children: a review of the literature

Abstract

A review of the literature on forces exerted by jumping people is presented. The actual goal was to collect data on jumping children, but only very limited research has been reported on this age group. Data were found on various jumping techniques as well as various influential factors such as body height, footware, properties of the substrate and the forces exerted in association with the different phases of a jumping movement. This study resulted in an experimental investigation which will be reported separately.     

Selling French Films on Foreign Markets: The International Strategy of a Medium-Sized Film Company

Foreign markets largely shaped the business strategy of LesFilms Albatros, a medium-sized, internationally networked specialtyproducer of films in interwar France. Depending more on foreignrevenues than did the Hollywood studios, Albatros also realizedhigher gross returns. Because films were capital goods providinga perishable product (seats at a specific time), their pricedepended on both expected performance and the threshold ticket-sellingcapacity necessary to recoup cinema fixed costs; some filmscould not be sold at any price. Given the small potential marketfor its films, Albatros had to find an intricate balance betweenproducing at low cost and delivering films with at least thresholdticket-selling capacity. It did so by differentiating its films,entering film distribution in France, coproducing internationally,and cooperating with Pathé and Gaumont, the two largestFrench film companies. While its larger European rivals wereobsessed with operational effectiveness vis-à-vis Hollywood,Albatros, by adopting a distinct strategic position, hardlyhad to pay attention to operational effectiveness at all. Itwas making a differentiated product for needs unserved by Hollywood.     

The Impact of Personal Resources and Job Crafting Interventions on Work Engagement and Performance

This study examined the impact of organizational interventions on work engagement and performance. Based on the job demands–resources model, we hypothesized that a personal resources intervention and a job crafting intervention would have a positive impact on work engagement and performance. We used a quasi‐experimental design with a control group. Primary school teachers participated in the study at two time points with six weeks between the measurements ( N = 102). The results showed that the personal resources intervention had a positive causal effect on work engagement. Additionally, the joint personal resources and job crafting intervention had a positive impact on self‐ratings of job performance. We discuss the implications of these findings for theory and practice. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Farmer-specific relationships between land use change and landscape factors: Introducing agents in empirical land use modelling

Traditional empirical land use change models generally assume one average land use decision-maker. Multi-Agent System (MAS) models, on the other hand, acknowledge existence of different types of agents, but their poor empirical embedding remains a serious handicap. This paper demonstrates how agent information can also be incorporated into empirical, biophysical land use models.
