The value of involving students in research has been well documented. By including students in research, active and independent learning opportunities are provided, the importance of inquiry and investigation is emphasized, and connections between course material and the discipline become evident. Relevant opportunities for involving students in research projects can sometimes be elusive. Faculty time constraints limit the number of projects that can be undertaken and the number of students involved. Furthermore, many students become intimidated when told that they are required to carry out a research project. The purpose of this study was to use current consumer issues to involve undergraduate students in a relevant research project. The research project was implemented in class settings with teams of students. Faculty selected contemporary consumer issues based upon perceived student interest and experiences as consumers. By using issues of high relevance and familiarity to students and using the team approach within a course that faculty members were already assigned to teach, the issues of time constraint for the faculty members and increased levels of comfort for students were addressed. Prior to undertaking the project, students were instructed in appropriate research methods. Research methods utilized included student development of survey instruments, collection and recording of data, interpretation of data and presentation of results. Students became familiar with various research practices. By working as team members, the students’ comfort level for being involved in research increased; however, other common group challenges arose. Relevant, contemporary consumer issues carry high relevance and interest for student groups, helping generate enthusiasm for the research process. The focus on involving students in research continues to be emphasized. By using research topics related to student's experiences as consumers, students are more readily engaged in undertaking research projects. We examined the discursive processes through which a new professional role identity for registered nurses was legitimized by analysing introductory textbooks over time. We theorize five ways of rhetorically legitimizing a new professional role identity: naturalizing the past, normalizing new meanings, altering identity referents, connecting with the institutional environment, and referencing authority. In contrast to previous research focused on legitimizing new practices, we contribute to the institutional literature by showing that legitimizing a professional role identity requires the incremental development of new arguments where the past is not delegitimized. Our findings also indicate that instead of a progression from moral and pragmatic legitimacy to cognitive legitimacy, legitimizing a new role identity may focus only on moral legitimacy. Finally, our study highlights the importance of interactions between the professional task environment and the wider institutional environment as part of the process of legitimizing a professional role identity. 相似文献

The thermal insulation (clo) values of different combinations of shell fabrics, linings, and filling materials were measured using a guarded hot plate. The same fabric systems were constructed into long and short coats, and an electrically heated manikin was used to measure the insulation provided by each coat worn with a standard set of indoor garments. The type of fabric and/or filling material significantly affected the insulation provided by fabric systems and coat ensem bles. The long coats were significantly warmer than their shorter counterparts, and the sensitivity of garment clo to fabric clo was greater for the long coats than for the short coats. It appears that small differences in the thermal insulation of fabric systems become more important when most of the body is covered with a given fabric system. However, when an outdoor garment covers only part of the body and is worn over garments with less thermal resistance, the garment's contribution to total body insulation is lessened. 相似文献

Seventy-five administrators of home economics programs rated 18 journals for familiarity and perceived quality. The Journals to which the most subscribed were the Journal of Home Economics (92%) and the Home Economics Research Journal (82%). The administrators rated the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition highest in quality. Almost all administrators stated that publishing is becoming more important in their evaluations of faculty. Data were collected on administrators' specializations and on the characteristics of responding administrators' institu tions. The growing stress on faculty publishing is evidenced at both small and large institutions, although in the past it was less emphasized at smaller colleges. Institution size is a factor in actual publishing productivity in that larger schools tend to have more prolific authors. 相似文献

Administrators of home economics research programs in 62 land-grant universities supplied data that were used to ascertain (1) the number and sub ject-matter distribution of faculty engaged in research, (2) the number and distribution of persons with competency to conduct research, and (3) the need for well-trained researchers in the future. Nearly 700 individuals were actively engaged in research activities with approximately 0.31 science years of support (representing salary, supplies, and maintenance) per researcher. The greatest numbers were in food and nutrition and in child development and family rela tions. A sizeable proportion of faculty members were qualified to conduct research but were not currently active in their respective fields. Many other faculty conduct research without financial support in addition to their full-time teaching and/or administrative responsibil ities.
