Research summary : We reconsider the relationship between multimarket contact and product quality in the airline industry by arguing that multimarket contact has both a negative mutual forbearance effect on quality and a positive network coordination effect on quality. Multimarket contact increases the frequency of contact between firms, and this anticipated future interaction promotes cooperation. In network industries, especially small firms may want to cooperate in order to increase the attractiveness of the composite product. By using size as a moderating variable, we indeed find a consistent positive effect of multimarket contact on product quality for small airlines. We show that this effect can be attributed to network coordination and that this effect generally dominates the negative mutual forbearance effect in a recent period. Managerial summary : Firms with sales in multiple geographical markets likely encounter each other with mutual respect (i.e., live and let live) because aggressive behavior in one market may lead to retaliatory responses in other markets. Such responses weaken competitive pressures on price and quality. Insofar these firms sell complementary products, they may however also coordinate and improve their joint product offering, resulting in better quality for the consumer. This paper shows that this positive effect of cooperation may dominate the negative competition‐reducing effect, depending on the size distribution of firms. The reason is that small or nondominant firms have a stronger incentive to produce compatible products than large or dominant firms with already a strong position in the (global) market. We analyze the anti‐poverty effect of social cash transfers using a micro‐econometric approach. Aggregate analyses, based on comparing average poverty indicators before and after public transfers, fail to address who receives the transfers and how the transfers are distributed among the poor. We consider three dichotomous outcome variables: (i) poverty status before the receipt of transfers; (ii) the receipt of transfers; and (iii) poverty status after the receipt of transfers. We use a trivariate probit model with sample selection, connecting the outcome variables to the characteristics of the household and its head. Our empirical results highlight that the Italian social transfers system overprotects certain household typologies at the expense of others, as social transfers are primarily awarded to employees with permanent positions and the elderly, while the system is not generous enough to large households with dependant children, the self‐employed, temporary contract workers, and the unemployed.  相似文献

This paper begins with a review of the literature on the labour market’s impact of globalisation. An interesting case-study is provided by the province of Brescia, an industrial area in Northern Italy, where both de-localisation and immigration have been two important means of reducing the pressure of labour demand on the locally scarce human resources. The conclusion is that, in order to preserve competitive positions in the long run, it is worthy to consider the qualitative consequences, e.g. the indispensable changes in the structure of production, rather than focusing on the quantitative effects on domestic employment. This paper was presented at the International Conference on “Developments in Economic Theory and Policy, Institutions and European Integration”, Bilbao, 15–17 July, 2004. It is part of a wider research: see the Working Paper by Albertini and Marelli (2003). The sections prepared by S.Albertini, referring to organisational change and human resources management implications, are not included in this final paper. I am grateful to anonymous referees for helpful comments.  相似文献
