The dynamics of industrial clustering and its implications for regional development present important challenges for research in economic geography. Awareness of the potential economic and innovative benefits from the geographic ‘clustering’ of firms in related industries is longstanding. In turn, the means of aiding and promoting such clustering forms an important focus for government agencies and other support organizations. This paper aims to explore these issues by drawing on empirical evidence from the opto–electronics industry in Germany.

In sum, the paper argues that, indeed, there appears to be geographic clustering in the opto–electronics industry in Germany, notably in the region of Thuringia, around Jena, and in the Munich area. The contrasting experiences of Jena and Munich suggest, however, that geographic clustering in high–technology industry does not necessarily lead to R&D collaboration and innovation. Further, in–depth research is required to determine the conditions under which geographic clustering is beneficial to innovation.  相似文献

While economic theory suggests that identifying alternate customers is costlier than identifying alternate specialized employees for customization providers, substantial field research evidence indicates the opposite, where providers are reportedly more dependent on employees than customers. We inquire into this contrasting picture between theory and practice through an in‐depth case study that suggests that what begins as customer dependence transforms into vulnerability to employees. While perceived vulnerability to customers is efficiently removed through ex ante controls, the physical asset specificity in each customer order generates task uncertainty, specialization and teamwork, which become the new sources of opportunism threat for the customization providers. Compounded layers of ex ante and ex post controls with frequent iterations suggest a need for continuous management (as against removal) of vulnerability to employees.  相似文献

To enrich the knowledge of the value of ethical leadership in a more entrepreneurial setting, we focus on technology-based young firms and theorize through the lens of CEO-TMT interface whether and how founder-CEOs’ ethical leadership influences young firms’ ambidexterity. We argue that founder-CEOs’ ethical leadership can enhance young firms’ ambidexterity in an indirect way, through promoting top management team (TMT) members’ advice-seeking behavior and team satisfaction. Data from a multi-source and time-lagged survey of founder-CEOs and all TMT members in 81 Chinese technology-based young firms supported our predictions. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our study to the extant research.

An act of leadership is always an act of practical theory. We lead because we hold visions of the world as it ought to be, because of the not yet, because of the potential that we see in ideas and people. Yet, there still exists a perceived binary between leadership theory (in the strong sense) and leadership practice, a binary that divides organizations, classrooms, and the differing bodies of leadership literature. In this Symposium, Duncan Waite and his colleagues discuss the barriers they have faced in bringing theory to the educational leadership classroom, as well as the promise they feel theory holds for more productive, equitable, and humane schooling organizations.  相似文献

The authors examine the relationship between gender and organizational justice perceptions and the implications of this relationship for organizing women. They employ a survey study design to confirm expectations associated with the anecdotal literature on this topic, namely that women place greater value on interactional justice than on distributive or procedural justice. Results indicate that gender leads to valuing interactional justice more highly only in interaction with race. Specifically, in contrast to white women and both white and black men, black women give greater weight to being treated with dignity and respect than to the other two organizational justice dimensions.

ABSTRACT

There is a dearth of understanding of gay fathers’ perspectives on leisure studies topics. If researchers are to conduct research that better reflects all fathers, it is important to gain insights into recruiting gay fathers, and to ensure that gay fathers know that their perspectives are needed and desired. Thus, in this research note, we highlight two important reflections on the difficulties we encountered when attempting to recruit gay fathers as research participants: (1) Heteronormativity exists in leisure studies and it is problematic for the recruitment of gay fathers; and (2) understaffed organisations are at times unable to help recruit gay fathers for research. Researchers who work with gay fathers may draw on our reflections to overcome similar difficulties that they may face. It is our hope that our reflections may contribute towards achieving the important social justice goal of including gay fathers in leisure studies.  相似文献
