Polynomial spline estimation for generalized varying coefficient partially linear models with a diverging number of components

Generalized varying coefficient partially linear models are a flexible class of semiparametric models that deal with data with different types of responses. In this paper, we focus on polynomial spline estimator as a computationally easier alternative to the more commonly used local polynomial regression approach, since one can directly take advantage of many existing implementations for generalized linear models. Furthermore, motivated by the high dimensionality characteristics that accompany many modern data sets nowadays, we investigate its asymptotic properties when both the number of nonparametric and the number of parametric components grows with, but is still smaller than, the sample size. Simulations and a real data example are used to illustrate our proposal.

炼油企业要正确进行投资决策，不仅要注重经济分析，而且还应注重伦理分析。由此提出了炼油企业伦理决策的思路和方法，给出了炼油企业伦理决策的指标体系，建立了相应的炼油企业伦理决策数学模型，并且进行了实例分析。计算结果表明所提出的模型是合理、实用的。     

Stochastic dominance and behavior towards risk: The market for Internet stocks

Internet stocks registered large gains in the late 1990s, followed by large losses from early 2000. Using stochastic dominance theory, we infer how investor risk preferences have changed over this cycle, and relate our findings to utility theory and behavioral finance. Our major findings are as follows. First, risk averters and risk seekers show a distinct difference in preference for Internet versus “old economy” stocks. This difference is most evident during the bull market period (1998–2000) where Internet stocks stochastically dominate old economy stocks for risk seekers but not risk averters. In the bear market, risk averters show an increased preference for old economy stocks, while risk seekers show a reduced preference for Internet stocks. These results are inconsistent with prospect theory and indicate that investors exhibit reverse S-shaped utility functions.

Survey Accuracy as a Function of Usage Rate

Using a large-scale AT&T database, we decompose usage levels into frequency and duration, and then investigate how they affect survey response accuracy. Results show that more accurate surveys are obtained from those in the high frequency group (possibly because of the increased use of the more accurate rate-based method of recall and higher degrees of regularity), and from those in the longer duration group (possibly because of increased involvement). We therefore suggest that the survey method is less suited for light users because of higher error, and that alternative methods such as diaries might be more appropriate. We also found similarly consistent results with respect to self-perception of usage rate and the accuracy of survey recall.
