The marketing of hamburger buns: An improved model for prediction

The Spring 1974 issue of this Journal published a paper that presented a model for predicting sales of hamburger buns. This article evaluates the model on the bases of statistical reporting, model specification, and implications for production policy. In addition, using the same data used for the original model, an improved model is developed whereby there is a 50% increase in explained variance.

Many of America's most successful companies have gone through a life cycle similar to the product life cycle. They began as innovators, and then grew to be giants in their markets. But, as their products mature, they need new products to continue company growth. However, the organizational structure of an established company is no longer suited for innovation. The authors provide some insight into this cycle, and offer some solutions for big companies which need new products.

Rent gradients for manufacturing are estimated using actual rent and value figures for Cincinnati. Distance to the city center is found to be of no importance in explaining rent or value variations.

This paper analyses the difficulties involved in timely processing of farm level survey data in LDC's using a main-frame computer. It then discusses the potential role of micro-computers used in the field to speed up and improve the quality of data collection.     

An estimate of black gross job losses due to reduced defense expenditures

The reduction in defense expenditures, due to the end of the cold war, is estimated to have a disproportionately heavy impact on black gross job losses. Several solutions are discussed with the hope that if they are successful, the negative social behavior that is often associated with increased joblessness can be ameliorated.
