in Japan. The symposium consists of thirteen papers. Nine of the papers including most of those on macroeconomic policy and

We study the relationship between Mr. Trump’s election prospects and the US dollar-peso exchange rate, controlling for other factors that determine overall exchange rates. Increases in Mr. Trump’s probability of winning generate short-run, but statistically significant economically meaningful, disturbances in the US dollar-peso exchange rate. We use the 1993 wave of the Assets and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old (AHEAD) data set to estimate a game‐theoretic model of families' decisions concerning the provision of informal and formal care for elderly individuals. The outcome is the Nash equilibrium where each family member jointly determines her consumption, transfers for formal care, and allocation of time to informal care, market work, and leisure. We use the estimates to decompose the effects of adult children's opportunity costs, quality of care, and caregiving burden on their propensities to provide informal care. Foreign exchange regimes have been found to play an important role in implementing trade and industrial development strategies in many developing countries. The economic incentives provided to export-oriented and import-substituting industries can be measured by the real effective exchange rate (REER) for imports and exports. Such measures are developed for Bangladesh. The REER for exports and imports increased by around 72 and 82%, respectively, over the period 1973–1974 to 1976–1977. From 1976–1977 to 1984–1985, the REER for imports fell by nearly 10% while the REER for exports declined by 6%, although the exchange rate for non-traditional exports fared somewhat better. The REER for both imports and exports appears to have recovered somewhat since 1984–1985, but the paper concludes that while trade and industry policies in Bangladesh have become less “inward-looking,” the exchange regime is still biased in favor of import-substituting industrialization. In this paper, I would like to outline an approach to publicpolicy that focused on fighting poverty and is based on an understandingof growth and development. Such a public policy requires answeringtwo key questions. First, what are key determinants of a developmentthat benefits poor people or what has been labelled"pro-poor growth"? And second, we need to answer the policyquestion: how can public action influence the key determinantswe identify? In putting the questions this way, we are settingourselves the task of building a dynamic public economics a public economics of development. Given that development isthe objective, this task will require a better understandingof how to measure it. And we must also achieve a better graspof changes of behaviour in the process of development, sincechanging perspectives and behaviour are usually an integralpart of the development story. In laying our task of advancinga dynamic public economics, however, let me emphasise that shouldbe building on not overturning pasttheory.
