Research summary> : W e take a microfoundational approach to understanding the origin of heterogeneity in firms' capacity to adapt to technological change. We develop a computational model of individual‐level learning in an organizational setting characterized by interdependence and ambiguity. The model leads to organizational outcomes with the canonical properties of routines: constancy, efficacy, and organizational memory. At the same time, the process generating these outcomes also produces heterogeneity in firms' adaptive capacity to different types of technological change. An implication is that exploration policy in the formative period of routine development can influence a firm's capacity to adapt to change in maturity. This points to a host of strategic trade‐offs, not only between performance and adaptive capacity, but also between adaptive capacities to different forms of change . Managerial summary : W hy are firms differentially effective at adapting to technological change? We argue that firms differ in the adaptive capacity of the routines that underlie their capabilities. These differences arise well before change occurs, and result because firms build routines that are differentially responsive to signals of performance decline associated with technological change. Thus, early managerial efforts to build superior productive efficiency must be complemented by efforts to build superior adaptive capacity. Our theory suggests that managers can prepare for technological change by implementing policies, in the formative period of organizational development, that promote individuals' exploration of novel actions. However, there are trade‐offs because preparation aimed at building adaptive capacity to one type of technological change may limit adaptive capacity to other types of change . In this paper the authors investigate enjoyment of the shopping experience, its influence on consumers' intention to repatronise a regional shopping centre and the effect of gender differences on shopping enjoyment. Four dimensions of shopping enjoyment are proposed and a 16-item measure is developed to assess 536 consumer perceptions of the shopping experience across five counties in the United Kingdom. Findings indicate that shopping experience enjoyment has a significant positive influence upon customers' repatronage intentions. Furthermore, men are found to have a stronger relationship of enjoyment with repatronage than women. The implications of these results are discussed, together with managerial implications, study limitations, and future research directions.  相似文献

The central issue addressed in this paper is encapsulated in the fact that many Indians, but relatively few black Caribbeans, are self-employed in Britain. This paper suggests two factors: first, black Caribbeans were "ethnically disinclined" to enter business; second, they did not posses the attributes that were positively related to entering business. Using data from the 1991 Census, this paper pinpoints how much of the observed paucity of self-employed black males in Britain was use to ethnic disinclination and how much was due to attribute disadvantage. More generally, it points to the importance of harnessing attitudes to attributes for generating a high rate rate of entry into self-employment. In this context, the acquisition of "social" attributes that relate to family formation, and the welding of the family into a cohesive economic unit, are at least as important as those attributes, like education, which relate purely to the individual.  相似文献

A recent empirical literature has addressed the relationship between income and religion, but most of the studies are based on microdata. Macroeconomic analysis of the issue has largely ignored the potential heterogeneity between countries. Using retrospective data on church attendance rates for a panel of countries between 1925 and 1990, we apply heterogeneous panel data estimators and reveal that the effect of participation in religious activities on income per capita is mostly non-significant. This is consistent with some of the recent research that casts doubt onto the influence of religion on income, once causality is taken into account.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Wachstumsmuster der gr?\ten Firmen der Welt zwischen 1962 und 1982. - Mit Hilfen der Gibrat- und Galton-Modelle wird gezeigt, da\ in den beiden Perioden 1962–1972 und 1972–1982 das Wachstum der gr?\ten Unternehmen langsamer war als das kleinerer Unternehmen. Die wirtschaftliche Konzentration innerhalb dieser Gruppe von Unternehmen mit Weltgeltung nahm in jeder Periode vermutlich ab. Die kleineren Firmen unter ihnen, die zwischen 1962 und 1972 verh?ltnism?\ig erfolgreich waren, wiederholten diesen Erfolg zwischen 1972 und 1982: “Erfolg erzeugt Erfolg”. Die Nationalit?t der Firmen scheint auf diese Ergebnisse für die Periode 1962–1972 ohne Einflu\ gewesen zu sein. Zwischen 1972 und 1982 dagegen gab es in Deutschland und Japan im Gegensatz zu den USA, Gro\britannien und dem Rest der Welt keine Tendenz der kleineren Firmen, schneller zu wachsen.
Résumé Structures de croissance des entreprises mondiales les plus grandes, 1962–1982.- En utilisant les modèles de Gibrat et Galton, les auteurs démontrent que la croissance proportioneile des entreprises les plus grandes était plus lente que celle des entreprises plus petites dans les deux périodes 1962–1972 et 1972–1980. La concentration dans ce groupe des grandes entreprises a probablement décr? dans chaque période. Des petites entreprises qui avaient relativement beaucoup de succès en 1962–1972 répétaient la bonne performance en 1972–1982: “succès produit de succès”. La nationalité de l’entreprise ne semble pas avoir influencé ces résultats en 1962–1972. Mais pour la période 1972–1982, l’Allemagne et le Japon différaient des Etats Unis, du R.U. et du reste du monde en manière que les entreprises les plus petites n’accroissent pas plus vite.

Resumen Pautas de crecimiento de las empresas más importantes, 1962–1982. — Utilizando los modelos de Gibrat y de Galton se demuestra que las empresas más grandes han crecido más lentamente que las empresas peque?as en los períodos 1962–1972 y 1972–1982. La concentración de empresas importantes probablemente disminuyó en cada período. Las empresas peque?as con éxito relativo en 1962–1972 pudieron repetir su éxito en 1972–1982: el éxito genera éxito. La nacionalidad de las empresas parece no haber tenido efecto sobre los resultados para 1962–1972. Pero en 1972–1982, Alemania y el Japón se diferenciaron de los EEUU, el Reino Unido y el resto del mundo al carecer de una tendencia favorable para la peque?a empresa.

This paper investigates the relative cyclical behaviour of the pay of piece workers and hourly paid workers. It uses a unique data set of blue-collar workers in British engineering between 1926 and 1966. The statistics are obtained from the payrolls of firms belonging to the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF). Roughly, the EEF accounted for one-third of the total engineering workforce. The data consist of cell averages delineated by 15 occupations in 29 engineering districts. Via a firm-union bargaining modelling structure, the question is examined as to likely earnings responses to price shocks under the two payment systems. The empirical work entails testing for cyclical differences in the two payments methods Insights are gained from distinguishing between the relatively tight post-war and slack pre-war labour markets.  相似文献
