This paper identifies technologically reflective individuals and demonstrates their ability to develop innovations that benefit society. Technological reflectiveness (TR) is the tendency to think about the societal impact of an innovation, and those who display this capability in public are individuals who participate in online idea competitions focused on technical solutions for social problems (such as General Electric's eco‐challenge, the James Dyson Award, and the BOSCH Technology Horizon Award). However, technologically reflective individuals also reflect in private settings (e.g., when reading news updates), thus requiring a scale to identify them. This paper describes the systematic development of an easy‐to‐administer multi‐item scale to measure an individual's level of TR. Applying the TR scale in an empirical study on a health monitoring system confirmed that individuals' degree of TR relates positively to their ability to generate (1) more new product features and uses, (2) features with higher levels of societal impact, and (3) features that are more elaborated. This scale allows firms seeking to implement co‐creation in their new product development (NPD) process and sustainable solutions to identify such individuals. Thus, this paper indicates that companies wishing to introduce new technological products with a positive societal impact may profit from involving technologically reflective individuals in the NPD process. 相似文献

Due to the increasing importance of producing and consuming energy more sustainably, Energy Informatics (EI) has evolved into a thriving research area within the CS/IS community. The article attempts to characterize this young and dynamic field of research by describing current EI research topics and methods and provides an outlook of how the field might evolve in the future. It is shown that two general research questions have received the most attention so far and are likely to dominate the EI research agenda in the coming years: How to leverage information and communication technology (ICT) to (1) improve energy efficiency, and (2) to integrate decentralized renewable energy sources into the power grid. The aim of the present study was to investigate, under realistic conditions, the empirically well proved phenomenon of higher facial prominence in newspaper photos of men compared to those of women («face-ism») and its reported effects on impression formation in beholders. At first, the mean face-ism indices of photos depicting males and females from four print media were calculated. In a second step real photos of male and female persons from these four print media were selected, corresponding exactly to the characteristic modal face-ism indices of their origin papers. These photos were rated by male and female reviewers concerning the attributes intelligence, ambition, attractiveness, and emotion. The judgements showed significant positive attributions of intelligence for all photos of high facial prominence. In addition, they showed higher attributions of intelligence and ambition for photos of men, higher attributions of attraction and emotion for photos of women, and furthermore some significant interactions concerning gender and age of reviewers. Scientific research concerning R&D staff structures has already been based on networks as they are mapped by co-patent data. The present paper combines the method of patent analysis with network analysis techniques and shows by means of a patent sample from cardiac pacemaker technology, that the different communication functions a star inventor accomplishes in their network are mirrored not only by quantity, but also by quality of patents. The mere patent quantity has a significant positive impact on the size of an inventors’ personal network and the number of inventors they can directly pass information to. But more importantly, there is significant empirical evidence that high technical specialisation has a positive impact on an inventor’s potential to mediate between others as well as on the efficacy to reach them on short notice. For the latter, likewise the number of citations received is a positive predictor. Thus, we characterise stars as industrious, well-known technical specialists and contradict the general assumption that generalists would be the ideal gatekeeper in an R&D network. 相似文献

Urban road pricing is regarded as an effective instrument to reduce traffic congestion and environmental-related problems in metropolitan areas. Whereas the overall impact of urban road pricing on car use adaptation and public acceptability is known, there are only inconsistent results concerning the socioeconomic differences in the response towards road pricing. However, this knowledge is necessary for the development of urban road pricing packages. This paper uses a segmentation approach to identify groups of car users with a similar background in relevant socioeconomic variables and compares their responses towards road pricing. Three groups are identified: young families, suburban families, and singles and couples. These groups indeed differ in their car use adaptation towards urban road pricing as well as in their preferred revenues use. While all three groups significantly reduced their private car use, the young families reduced their car use most, followed by the group of singles and couples. Complementary measures are discussed that are believed to facilitate car use adaptation of each group in response towards urban road pricing. 相似文献
