The constructed complex of antifiltration components, consisting of a grout curtain, concrete-filled karst hollows, and local concrete crosscut walls corresponds to the difficult geologic conditions of the Chain-N'yan massif.

The adopted work organization, with construction of tunnels cutting across the entire karst mass, simultaneous rock grouting, and more precise determination of the geomorphology made it possible to considerably reduce the proposed volumes and costs of the antifiltration components of the Hoabinh hydraulic development.

The adopted scheme for providing a working face for the antifiltration measures at El. 133 m was the optimal. It opportunely permitted ensuring readiness of the high-head front for filling the reservoir to El. 112 m in November 1990, and to the NPL at El. 125 m in September 1991.

The obtainment, as a result of numerous calculations on a computer, of generalized relations of the main indices of the load dropping process in the field TW/Tu–TW/TS makes it possible at the initial design stages to rapidly analyze the decisions made about the parameters of pressure conduits and pump-turbines and regulating regimes.

By virtue of the peculiarities of the universal characteristics of reversible diagonal-flow pump-turbines, the maximum value of the temporal nonuniformity of the operation of the unit during load dropping in real ranges of the constants of inertia of the conduits and unit does not exceed the allowable standard value max=nmax/n0=1.6.

The search for efficient regulating regimes reducing water hammer facilitates the introduction of the new concepts initial and final water hammer and plotting the corresponding zones on generalizing graphs.

Rotating the runner blades of the diagonal-flow pump-turbines along with closing the gate apparatus after dropping the load is favorable for reducing water hammer. In this respect they can be more preferable than reversible mixed-flow pump-turbines for the same values of the heads, TW/TS and TW/Tu.

Many public and private organizations are developing and publishing clinical guidelines to assist health care providers and patients in making appropriate medical decisions. Unless clinical guidelines are part of a well-designed managed care program, they have little effect on physician practice styles. This article explores integral components of an effective guideline-based utilization management program. "This paper deals with the economic consequences of a changing demography in an industrialized country, namely the Netherlands. The analytical framework chosen is that of general equilibrium as statistically given by the social accounting matrix (SAM) in which we introduce households by size for the present economic demographic situation (1981) and for a future simulated situation (2010) featuring in particular a relative increase in one-person households (individualization). We herein propose a simulation-optimization model for groundwater remediation, using PAT (pump and treat), by coupling artificial neural network (ANN) with the grey wolf optimizer (GWO). The input and output datasets to train and validate the ANN model are generated by repetitively simulating the groundwater flow and solute transport processes using the analytic element method (AEM) and random walk particle tracking (RWPT). The input dataset is the different realization of the pumping strategy and output dataset are hydraulic head and contaminant concentration at predefined locations. The ANN model is used to approximate the flow and transport processes of two unconfined aquifer case studies. The performance evaluation of the ANN model showed that the value of mean squared error (MSE) is close to zero and the value of the correlation coefficient (R) is close to 0.99. These results certainly depict high accuracy of the ANN model in approximating the AEM-RWPT model. Further, the ANN model is coupled with the GWO and it is used for remediation design using PAT. A comparison of the results of the ANN-GWO model with solutions of ANN-PSO (ANN-Particle Swarm Optimization) and ANN-DE (ANN-Differential Evolution) models illustrates the better stability and convergence behaviour of the proposed methodology for groundwater remediation.
