Much research is needed to determine the extent to which the high school social studies curriculum, and certain courses within that curriculum, contribute toward economic understanding. Boddy and Tocco report on their attempt to assess the social studies curriculum in Southwest Florida. They also single out one required course, Americanism vs. Communism, which was designed to “emphasize the free-enterprise-competitive economy of the United States,” and measure its impact on a sample of high school seniors. The findings are not encouraging. Although this study applies to one limited geographic area, others may find it interesting because it suggests the need for similar research in other parts of the nation. 相似文献

This article examines the nature of graduate overeducation amongst a group of applicants to a graduate conversion programme. It was found that while a substantial proportion of earnings differentials were associated with a mismatch between individual skill levels and job requirements, wage gaps were still likely to occur should such mismatches be eliminated. The evidence suggests that graduate wage levels are heavily related to sheepskin effects associated with the attainment of jobs with graduate level entry requirements. These sheepskin effects suggest that the process of job categorization is arbitrary in nature, with stated job requirements somewhat independent of actual skill requirements. The analysis suggests that graduate overeduction is better understood within the context of both skill and categorization mismatches as opposed to skill matches alone. 相似文献

Following the waves of corporate scandals and the increasing attention to corporate governance, the transparency of reporting on director-level pay has increased across Europe. This article examines the extent of convergence in laws, codes and corporate reporting practices in regard to director-level pay in France, Germany, Switzerland and the UK. The paper analyses annual reports and the websites of 23 companies, using institutional theory to discuss the coercive, normative and mimetic pressures for convergence that are revealed, not just in the laws and codes in each country, but also in the standardized wording in the relevant sections of reports which have become clichés. 相似文献

The corpus of research on ethnic identity in advertising indicates that (1) ethnic identity influences commonly examined attitudinal and purchase-intention outcomes, and (2) attitudes toward both the actor(s)/model(s) and the ad moderate attitudes toward brands depicted in ethnically resonant ads. Individual studies often differ by measurement type (i.e., single-item measure versus multi-item scale), study design (i.e., experiment versus survey), and diversity of respondent sample. Seemingly, ethnic-identity effects are greater for studies that relied on single-item measures, experimental designs, and more diverse samples. This article presents an application of a bibliometric and visual study of the research carried out on a social science subfield,
concretely the consumer behaviour research (CBR), from a longitudinal perspective (period 1966–2008). The study combines performance
analysis and science mapping for detecting and visualizing conceptual subdomains. Quantitative and qualitative measures are
used in order to identify the most prominent themes. Quantitative data are used to put together very related concepts (themes
or clusters of topics), while qualitative indicators (as those based on citations) are used to measure the quality and/or
impact of the detected themes. The study also uses bibliometric maps to show in a visual way the associations between the
main concepts treated by the CBR community. The maps provide insight into the structure of the CBR, visualize the division
of the field into several subfields, and indicate the relationships between these subfields. Co-word analysis is the bibliometric
technique used to identify the main themes. All this allows us to quantify and visualize the thematic evolution of the CBR.
It also helps to both experts and novices to understand the current state of the art of the CBR and to predict where future

Professional plumbers play an essential role in the implementation of water efficiency. If North America is to achieve high
water efficiency standards and more ambitious plumbing codes, plumbers will need to be actively included in the water efficiency
discussion. Repositioning the industry will required a cultural shift because the plumbing community has been mostly ignored
in discussions of the larger environmental agenda and priorities. This repositioning will require substantial rethinking and
retraining. New knowledge will need to be transmitted about emerging water efficient technologies, public policies and practices,
as well as the rationale for use in residential and Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) sectors. The GreenPlumbers
Program (GPP) initiated this knowledge transfer process. Originating in Australia and expanded to the United States, the GPP
is a national training and accreditation program for professional plumbers. Their focus has been on upgrading skills and awareness
of water efficiency, conservation, and the professional plumbers’ roles in the contemporary environmental context. In this
paper we report on the efficacy of the GPP’s curriculum and the process of transferring explicit water efficiency knowledge.
Semi-structured interviews and a survey were used to gather the data. We considered how the program participants incorporated
the GPP curriculum into their ‘day-to-day’ practices and operations post-certification. We also investigated participants’
motivating factors and cross-referenced these findings to their overall assessment of the program. Recommendations focus on
how the GPP can best influence and contribute to a more comprehensive water efficiency agenda. 相似文献
