NPD speed vs. innovativeness: The contingent impact of institutional and market environments

Whereas new product development (NPD) speed and product innovativeness are two critical strategic determinants of firm performance, previous studies show inconclusive findings about their effects. Drawing on institutional and contingency perspectives, this study elucidates value appropriation issues in NPD and examines how the effects of NPD speed and technological radicalness are contingent on institutional frameworks and market conditions. Results from 244 high-tech companies in China show that dysfunctional competition enhances the effect of NPD speed, but legal inadequacy hinders the impact of technological radicalness on firm performance. Market growth strengthens the performance effect of NPD speed but restrains the effect of technological radicalness. In addition, technological radicalness demonstrates stronger effects on firm performance when demand uncertainty is high.

Technology readiness and usage: a global-identity perspective

The past several decades have witnessed the rapid globalization of consumption markets and widespread diffusion of information and communication technologies. However, the use of technology by consumers is not a foregone conclusion. We investigate the role of global self-identity on the orientation toward technology readiness and usage. Relying on a social-identity model of motivation as our theoretical framework, we propose a model which incorporates global self-identity (i.e., cosmopolitanism/parochialism and global/local identification) and self-regulation (i.e., promotion and prevention focus) in predicting technology readiness and usage in a self-service technology context. The proposed model is tested in two different cultures, the U.S. and China, and is contrasted with two theoretically-competing models as well. Results provide support for the hypothesized model, and a number of limitations, implications, and directions for future research are discussed.

The coordination of routine and emergency water resources management: progress in China

ABSTRACT

This study summarizes the progress of the coordinated management of routine and emergency water resources globally and then investigates the Chinese situation. The results show that China’s coordinated management system needs further optimization, the technical system needs further innovation, construction projects need further support and information construction needs further updating. This study proposes perfecting the management system and routine and emergency management mechanism; improving the engineering technical system to promote the ability to build water resources management; strengthening the ability to identify routine and emergency thresholds; adhering to comprehensive prevention and control management; and encouraging public and stakeholder participation.
