The paper assesses the relationship between income and price levels in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) republics relative to remaining countries during the period 1991–2000. The basic idea of the paper is that the price levels of FSU republics were in the 1990s remarkably lower not only vis-à-vis the non-transitional economies with income levels similar to those of the FSU republics but also vis-à-vis non-FSU transitional countries. The author finds out the cross-country relationship between income and price levels among non-transitional economies and derives from this equation the income-predicted price levels for the FSU republics both at the very beginning, in the middle and at the end of the 1990s. Based on his calculations, the author assesses the differences between the FSU republics’ income-predicted and actual price levels and compares the results with those of the non-FSU transitional countries. 相似文献

The French rejection of the Treaty Establishing a Constitution for Europe on 29 May 2005 resulted from (1) fear of loss of national identity as a result of the European integration process and (2) the voters' sanction of the French government's record. Using cross-section data covering the 96 French metropolitan departments, we estimate referendum vote functions in order to assess the effects of these influences on the outcome of the referendum. The present study tests for the J-curve for five North European countries—Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden—using generalized impulse response functions. The results provide empirical support for the J-curve. Each country has an impulse response function generated from a vector error-correction model that suggests that after a depreciation, there will be a dip in the export-import ratio within the first half-year after the depreciation. The long-run export-import ratio appears to be higher than the low point of this early dip in almost all cases. Also, in most cases, the export-import ratio appears in many periods after the depreciation to be converging from below to a higher long-run equilibrium. 相似文献

European Technology,Trade and Income Changes for 1975–85: An Intercountry Input–Output Decomposition
This paper refines, develops and applies input–output (IO) decomposition analysis: by providing it with a unique intercountry perspective, by concentrating on explaining income growth, and by systematically separating the effects of trade structure changes from the effects of technology and preference changes. The resulting matrix formula distinguishes six components and is applied to a set of European Community (EC) intercountry IO tables for 1975 and 1985 with 25 sectors and eight EC countries. Because GDP growth is analyzed in nominal terms, macro-economic demand growth is found to be the most important component. The other five components relate to the effects of coefficient changes. Their sizes are smaller, but significant and widely different between sectors and countries, which shows that there is clear potential for effective sector policies. 相似文献

A questionnaire-based survey is applied to investigate the perception of mobilitybarriers by European airline managers. Whilst the liberalisation of Europe's airline markets removed regulatory mobility barriers, we find that mobility impediments still appear to exist. Potential entrants moreover, perceive some mobility barriers as significantly more effective than others. The perceived effectiveness of a particular mobility barrier varies considerably among airline managers. We also provide an overview of previous studies on the contestability hypothesis and the effectiveness of endogenous (strategic) mobility barriers. Our results support earlier findings for the U.S. to the effect that barriers to mobility are perceived to exist and matter. Whilst our results are clearly subjective, as they are based on the perceptions of managers, we believe such perceptions matter as they inform managerial actions. The purpose of this study is to investigate possibilities to uniform financial rating of technology companies in Europe from the perspective of a potential investor. The data consist of financial statements of 6,370 companies from seventeen European countries and the US in 1993–1996. The data from 1994–1996 are used to measure three–year success and the data from 1993 to predict this success. Success is measured by the principal factor of six performance measures. Country risk, percentage change in GDB, size, and eight financial ratios calculated for 1993 are used as predictors of success in the binary logistic analysis. 相似文献

This article assesses the rationale for inflation convergence as a major criterion for the passage to the final stage of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). A simple two-country model is developed to examine the effects of the change in regime under different hypotheses concerning agents' expectations. The results suggest that, in the absence of convergence, the move to EMU is likely to produce spillover effects from the high-inflation to the low-inflation country. The latter, therefore, has a strong incentive to request strict convergence criteria for inflation before moving to EMU. 相似文献
