Wage inequality and establishment heterogeneity

We analyze wage dispersion within and across establishments in Korea between 2007 and 2013. We find that foreign owned establishments and those operating in global markets have higher within-establishment wage dispersion. The effect is over and above the establishment size effect. Furthermore, wages are higher in larger establishments and internationally oriented ones. Our findings are consistent with theories explaining management pay and the scope of control. Our results also provide evidence that can explain the rise in wage inequality due to the emergence of ‘super star’ firms and global supply chains.

On the Role of Paradigms in Understanding Economic Globalization

Any adequate analysis of economic globalization necessarily requires fundamental understanding of the worldviews underlying the views expressed with respect to the nature and role of economic globalization. This paper is based on the premise that any worldview can be associated with one of the four basic paradigms: functionalist, interpretive, radical humanist, and radical structuralist. It argues that any view expressed with respect to economic globalization is based on one of the four paradigms or worldviews. It, therefore, discusses four views with respect to the nature and role of economic globalization which correspond to the four broad worldviews. The paper emphasizes that the four views expressed are equally scientific and informative; they look at the nature and role of economic globalization from a certain paradigmatic viewpoint. Emphasizing this example in the area of economic globalization, the paper concludes that there are opportunities for each paradigm to benefit from contributions coming from the other three paradigms.     

中国当前应侧重对区域经济一体化的研究

经济全球化是我们在世纪之交面临的一个重大发展趋势。受这一趋势的影响，我国理论界也开始了对经济全球化的研究，并主张中国应积极参与经济全球化。在分析经济全球化的特点和我国经济发展状况的基础上认为，我国当前应侧重于对区域经济一体化的研究与利用。

20世纪90年代以来,在世界范围内出现了一股公司治理改革的潮流,并导致不同国家的公司治理呈现出一定程度的趋同.这场公司治理全球运动的背景是日益提高的全球化,尤其是经济全球化,而不同治理模式先后出现问题则是这场运动的导火索.此外,日益壮大的机构投资者、相关国际组织的推动以及全球范围内金融自由化的发展等因素,也对公司治理全球运动起到了积极的推动作用.     

经济全球化对税收的影响及我国税制改革思路

经济全球化的进程实质上是商品和要素的国际流动不断深入的过程.这一进程既是世界范围内资源优化配置的过程,又是对国家税收主权侵蚀与冲击的过程.面对经济全球化,主权国家在充分认识到全球化的机遇与挑战的同时,一方面积极主动调整税制,促进税收国际化,另一方面通过加入WTO,积极参与国际税收竞争与协调.我国现行税制在一定程度上不适应当前经济全球化趋势下我国即将加入WTO这一形势的要求,必须依据WTO有关税收的原则,提出我国现行税制改革的整体思路.     

Deindustrialization in 18th and 19th century India: Mughal decline, climate shocks and British industrial ascent

India was a major player in the world export market for textiles in the early 18th century, but by the middle of the 19th century it had lost all of its export market and much of its domestic market, primarily to Britain. The ensuing deindustrialization was greatest c1750-c1860. We ask how much of India’s deindustrialization was due to local supply-side forces—such as political fragmentation and a rising incidence of drought, and how much to world price shocks. An open, three-sector neo-Ricardian model organizes our thinking and a new relative price database implements the empirical analysis. We find local supply side forces were important from as early as 1700. We then assess the size of Indian deindustrialization in comparison with other parts of the periphery.

Globalization and the synchronization of transport terminals

Globalization underlines higher levels of integration between different production and distribution systems. It is commonly acknowledged that this process leans on improvements of transport modes and infrastructure, resulting in a space/time collapse. However, it is argued in this paper that the synchronization of transport terminals is the main paradigm shift of the current space/time collapse. Terminals are where transport efficiency is mainly achieved. Empirical evidence is drawn from the strategies of freight and air transport companies.
