Gains from trade in used goods: Evidence from automobiles

I investigate the welfare effects of trade liberalization by exploiting a natural policy experiment in the economy of Cyprus. A 1993 law relaxed import restrictions on used vehicles and enabled the importation of second-hand Japanese automobiles into the country. This led to a dramatic shift of consumer purchases from new to used cars and a substantial expansion of the overall market. Welfare gains computed from a structural demand system average $2000 per purchaser per year over a four-year period after the policy change. The findings are suggestive of the potential for substantial gains from liberalizing trade in used goods.     

Delay and dynamics in labor market adjustment: Simulation results

We simulate numerically a trade model with labor mobility costs added, modeled in such a way as to generate gross flows in excess of net flows. Adjustment to a trade shock can be slow with plausible parameter values. In our base case, the economy moves 95% of the distance to the new steady state in approximately eight years. Gross flows have a large effect on this rate of adjustment and on the normative effects of trade. Announcing and delaying the liberalization can build – or destroy – a constituency for free trade. We study the conditions under which these contrasting outcomes occur.

Asmall-scale survey was deducted recently by China's Foreign Trade and showed that Chinese urbanites are changing their attitudes toward Japan and many of them are viewing their Asian neighbor more positively.On the topic of "Japan Image",we interviewed over 50 young white collars from China.Most of them have been to Japan or working for Japanese enterprises in China.Based on their interests and knowledge to Japan,we paint an international picture to this economic giant by inflection from the thought mirror in minds.     

Sino-Japanese Economic Relations： A Chinese Perspective

The bilateral trade between China and Japan amounted to US$236 billion in 2007, reflecting an increase of 20.6 percent compared with the previous year, 33 times over the trade volume at the beginning of the reform and opening up. This vast volume and fast growth took place amid China＇s accession into the World Trade Organization at the end of 2001 and increased trade disputes between the two countries, not to mention recurrent foreign exchange rate fluctuations in international currency markets and somehow intensified fears in Japan of China＇s enhanced competitiveness.

FDI对我国价格贸易条件影响的实证分析

本文利用1985～2006年的统计数据,建立了包含价格贸易条件、初级产品进口额、工业制成品出口额、贸易顺差和外资企业出口占我国出口总额的比重这5个变量的协整模型和误差修正模型,对外商直接投资对我国价格贸易条件的影响进行了实证分析,实证结果表明工业制成品出口是导致价格贸易条件恶化的重要原因,而初级产品进口对改善价格贸易条件有正效应,但正效应目前还不显著,FDI对改善我国的价格贸易条件有显著的正效应。在此基础上,本文提出了改善我国价格贸易条件的政策建议。     

中美贸易逆差探源与对策分析

中美贸易逆差的原因与美国的出口管制制度、美国偏低的储蓄率、中美两国不同的产业结构、不一致的统计标准、中国大量吸收外国直接投资等有关。中国可以通过政策鼓励从美国进口、完善公平贸易政策、转变贸易增长方式、扩大国内需求等方式正确处理中美贸易不平衡问题。     

中国旅游服务贸易竞争力影响因素的实证分析

改革开放以来,中国旅游服务贸易快速、健康发展,旅游服务贸易竞争力越来越强,但与世界旅游强国相比仍有很大差距。本文对中国旅游服务贸易竞争力的影响因素进行了分析,实证分析的结果表明:中国旅行社数量对提高旅游服务贸易竞争力有促进作用;旅游交通对中国旅游出口收入有显著影响,其影响力要大于旅游产业组织的影响;中国的旅游人力资源状况对于旅游服务贸易竞争力的影响不显著。在此基础上,文章提出了相关的政策建议。
