Abstract The advent of the EU–US Open Skies Agreement has been widely anticipated. A number of consequences have been predicted, for example, impacts on fares, passenger volumes, choice and consumer welfare. Airline costs are also predicted to fall as a result of increased competitiveness and increased cooperation among airlines. For the short period since the implementation of the Agreement, it is relatively easy to assess the supply-side changes that have been made, but more difficult to make wider judgements. This paper indicates the data that will be required to make these judgements and notes some methodological difficulties. Early estimates of the impact on passenger numbers are given using time series analysis focusing on London airports, in particular London Heathrow and airports served by British Airway's Open Skies Airline from Paris Orly and Amsterdam Schipol. On prévoit également que les coûts des compagnies d'aviation devraient baisser, en conséquence de l'augmentation non seulement de la compétitivité, mais aussi de la concurrence entre les compagnies. A l'issue de la courte période qui s'est écoulée depuis l'implémentation de l'Accord, il est relativement aisé d’évaluer les variations qui se sont produites du côté de l'offre, mais beaucoup plus difficile de formuler des opinions plus générales. La présente communication indique les données qui seront requises pour formuler ces jugements, et souligne certaines difficultés sur le plan de la méthodologie. Des premières évaluations de l'impact sur le nombre de voyageurs ont été avancées, sur la base d'analyses à série temporelle concentrées sur les aéroports de Londres, notamment l'aéroport Heathrow de Londres et les aéroports desservis par la compagnie Open Skies de British Airway entre Paris Orly et l'aéroport Schipol d'Amsterdam. While the first phase provided communication services, like e-mail, the WWW has established an interactive platform to allow easy access to advanced services. We track IBM’s approach to software production and commercialization between 1950 and the present. We find that in the 1950s IBM followed what today would be called an open-source model – its software source code was open, free of charge, and written collaboratively with its users. By the mid 1980s, all of these attributes had been reversed – IBM’s software was closed source, sold or leased independently of hardware sales, and written without the collaboration of its users. More recently, the company has been in a state of transition, achieving a balance between free, open-source software and proprietary software that still generates 20% of its revenues. We interpret these radical swings in light of the substantial changes that have taken place since the 1950s in the costs and benefits of open source, bundled, and collaborative software vis-à-vis the alternatives. 相似文献

In this paper we study duopolistic competition between closed and open source software. Inspired by recent contributions on open source, we propose a two-stage game with perfect information and product differentiation, in which producers first set software quality and then determine prices (the price is zero for open source programs). We assume perfect software compatibility and model lock-in effects, a network externality component of software quality, and accumulation of experience in software use and implementation. In comparison to the monopolistic benchmark case, we argue that, in a duopoly created by the emergence of an open source program, the proprietary software producer will reduce its selling price if: (i) its network of users is larger than the open source network and its consumers are largely familiar with its program, (ii) it has a small network of unskilled consumers. On the other hand, the price of proprietary software will increase if its users form a large, but poorly-skilled network. Furthermore, we show that, in all of the above cases, the hedonic quality of proprietary software increases. Finally, by modeling experience accumulation processes through difference equations, we show that the ratio between the closed and open source programs’ opportunity costs for software learning and deployment plays a crucial role in shaping market outcomes. If open source software remains too complex and technical for unskilled or time-pressed users, a shared market solution, in which both programs are adopted, is likely to emerge. However, if opportunity costs in learning and understanding open source programs are particularly low, or at least equal to the opportunity costs of a closed-source program, then open source dominance emerges (i.e. markets tip to open source). 相似文献

Knowledge provided by a firm's founder(s) is one of the most important success factors for SMEs. This paper aims to identify the impact of the founder's knowledge on business performance in today's organization. It is with this in mind that we propose a specialized organizational learning process, which we refer to as the congenital learning process, by which the firm transforms the tacit and explicit knowledge of the founder into knowledge which is available to the firm and its members. The research model and hypothesized relationships are empirically tested using the structural equation modeling (SEM) approach, validated by factor analysis of 130 SMEs in the Spanish telecommunications sector. Two structural equation models, derived from the literature, have been used, resulting in the conclusion that organizational performance is positively affected by the transfer and transformation of knowledge as long as the organization has implemented processes that lead to the creation of what we refer to as an open organizational context. 相似文献

现有关于网络环境下开放式创新的研究大都聚焦于内向型开放式创新,对于外向型开放式创新的关注不足。为更加真实地展现创新网络中知识创新、创新输出的整体行为机制,基于小世界网络仿真建模方法,从创新输出企业视角,探究创新输出与创新网络、创新绩效之间的内在关系。结果发现:网络关系强度、创新开放度与网络整体知识水平呈正相关关系,而个体网络规模与网络整体知识水平呈非线性相关关系;网络关系强度与网络知识水平分布均匀性呈正相关关系,创新开放度、个体网络规模与网络知识水平分布均匀性均呈非线性相关关系;当企业创新能力较强、解吸能力较弱时,网络整体知识水平和网络知识分布差异较大。创新输出企业可以结合网络结构和网络关系,优化创新网络、主体能力与创新开放度,制定开放策略,从而实现获取创新收益与保持自身竞争优势的双重平衡。 相似文献

What is a relevant model for the European business cycle? In this paper, the empirical performances of three models are compared: a canonical Walrasian R.B.C. framework, its extension to the case of a small open economy, and a version of this model with search and wage bargaining on the labor market. Structural parameters of the models are estimated using G.M.M. and their abilities to reproduce the French business cycle, taken as representative of the European business cycle, are tested. Only the small open economy with unemployment is able to generate theoretical moments that match their empirical counterparts. 相似文献
