Wildland Fire and Organic Discourse: Negotiating Place and Leisure Identity in a Changing Wildland Urban Interface

A lack of research on the conceptual intersection of leisure, place and wildland fire and its role in identity prompted this exploratory study. The purpose of this research was to gather evidence regarding how people negotiate identities under the threat of wildland fire. Qualitative interviews with 16 homeowners and recreationists who value leisure activities in undeveloped places in Colorado's Arapaho-Roosevelt National Forest were conducted. Results show that wildland fire plays a varied role in the identities of many of the research participants. Three dominant discourses of nature (i.e., humanist, protectionist and organic) helped explain these identity-related reactions to wildland fire. An understanding of the multidimensional aspects of place and leisure identity highlighted in this research could help land managers particularly related to the organic discourse.     

Framing Work Through a Socio-technical Ensemble: The Case of Butler Co.

The paper argues for conceptualizing technology as a socio-technical ensemble which emerges from the socio-political context of the organization. This perspective is used to inform a case study carried out within a consumer goods company, where the focus is upon the configuration of work and technology associated with the job of sales representative. It is argued that the acquiescence and compliance of the sales representatives are to be understood primarily on the basis of senior management's effective deployment of its power resource through 'enacting the environment', the configuration and utilization of the ensemble, and its employment strategy. 'Closure' and 'stabilization' had occurred, and the ensemble was operating on a number of levels.

基于ATM技术的有线接入网入侵检测系统研究

为了对特定用户实行实时动态数据采集,通过分析UTOPIA接口和信元结构,探讨了基于ATM技术的有线网络系统相关的协议、数据处理程序以及基于FPGA实现数据分装与重组,提出了基于ADSL接入网UTOPIA接口的IP数据包提取方法,实现了基于ATM技术的有线网络实时动态入侵检测的目标.     

Service Delivery Encounters in Business-to-Business Contexts as a Source of Innovation – A Conceptual and Explorative Study

This article offers a conceptual and empirical view on the potential for innovation impulses stemming from the supplier-customer interface as a more or less unplanned by-product of customer contact of service companies. The empirical findings support the existence of a considerable innovation potential at the supplier-customer interface. Determinants of this source of innovation are identified and suggestions are made as to how companies can tap this potential. Does Competitive Behavior not Mean Lower Prices? Impact of Growing Demand and Limited Seat Availability in Asia-Pacific Commercial Aviation Industry

This article explores the airline industry where passengers are heterogeneous in their willingness to pay and markets are capacity constrained. Contrary to conventional wisdom, theauthor find that more intense competition can result in higher prices and a lower aggregate supply. It is shown that the price of the seat with a lower profit margin-per-unit capacity may be higher when there is a smaller number of companies in competition. It is also shown that total supply of business class seats may be reduced when there are more firms in competition. These phenomena occur because of how competition affects airlines’ seat capacity allocation among products. Interactions between competition and seat capacity constraints are nontrivial including nonmonotonic relationships.     

研发与制造界面整合影响因素研究

本文主要研究我国高技术企业新产品开发过程中研发与制造的界面整合问题。作者借助于统计软件包SPSS17.0,对国内7个城市40家大型高技术企业调查问卷进行了实证的研究。研究结果表明:研发与制造部门的五项界面整合因子都能显著影响高技术企业的新产品开发绩效,影响企业的技术创新能力。企业必须具备高质量的内部界面,才能应对不断变化的环境。

Creating Economic Advantage By Setting Compatibility Standards: Can ‘Physical Tie-Ins’ Extend Monopoly Power?

The paper deals with the micro-economics of interface manipulation, i.e. the design of the interface between two products to enhance the profits accruing to the firm controlling the design. Taking several alleged instances of ‘physical tie-ins’ as a reference point, it argues that economist's usual treatment of ‘tie-ins’ and bundling is inappropriate for these cases, and it proposes an alternative model. The model identifies the circumstances under which interface manipulation will yield competitive advantages to an integrated system designer. It also focuses on the limits placed on such behavior by the demand for ‘backward compatible’ components. The model's implications are then examined for the light they shed on arguments about the plausibility of ‘leveraging’–i.e. the use of monopoly power in one component market to gain monopoly power in a complementary component market. The paper concludes that the notion of leveraging can be given analytical substance, but emphasizes that the concept should be used with some care.
