Abstract: Loan announcement effects for 152 Canadian companies are examined to investigate the efficiency of monitoring by banks facing lender environmental liability. Market reaction to the announcement of bank debt to 'environmental' firms is more positive and significant than for 'non-environmental' firms and, for firms in industries with a higher likelihood of experiencing spill events, is more positive and significant, reinforcing earlier results that establish a relationship between specific loan/borrower characteristics and announcement period excess returns and providing further evidence on the 'uniqueness' of bank loans by demonstrating the superior ability of banks to monitor corporate borrowers exposed to environmental liability. 相似文献

This paper investigates the causal links between stock market performance and consumption for five Asian economies by applying the bound tests of Pesaran et al. and lag augmented VAR of Toda and Yamamoto . We find two‐way causal relationships between stock market performance and consumption in the cases of Hong Kong and Taiwan in the long run. The existence of such two‐way causal links indicates that stock market performance and consumption mutually affect each other, implying that the previous studies may have overestimated the wealth effect of the stock markets without taking account of the reverse causation from consumption to the stock markets. The short‐run effect of the stock market on consumption is more visible than the long‐run effect in most of the sample economies, suggesting that changes in consumption directly reflect stock market fluctuations. 相似文献

A substantial body of recent work has opened the way to exploring the statistical properties of DEA estimators of production frontiers and related efficiency measures. The purpose of this paper is to survey several possibilities that have been pursued, and to present them in a unified framework. These include the development of statistics to test hypotheses about the characteristics of the production frontier, such as returns to scale, input substitutability, and model specification, and also about variation in efficiencies relative to the production frontier. 相似文献

The Nested PIGLOG Model: An Application to U.S. Food Demand 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A new demand system is introduced, the Nested PIGLOG model, nesting thirteen other demand systems including five that are also new. This new model and its nested special cases are applied to models of U.S. food demand that include food-at-home (FAH), food-away-from-home (FAFH), and alcoholic beverages. Although nested tests and out-of-sample forecasting performance favor generalizing models to a certain degree, statistically insignificant improvements to in-sample-fit and even poorer out-of-sample forecast accuracy undermine further generalizations. In this paper, progressive stress accelerated life tests are considered when the lifetime of a product under use condition
follows a finite mixture of distributions. The experiment is performed when each of the components in the mixture follows
a general class of distributions which includes, among others, the Weibull, compound Weibull, power function, Gompertz and
compound Gompertz distributions. It is assumed that the scale parameter of each component satisfies the inverse power low,
the progressive stress is directly proportional to time and the cumulative exposure model for the effect of changing stress
holds. Based on type-I censoring, the maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) of the parameters under consideration are obtained.
A special attention is paid to a mixture of two Rayleigh components. Simulation results are carried out to study the precision
of the MLEs and to obtain confidence intervals for the parameters involved. 相似文献

We propose a new bivariate distribution following a GLM form i.e., natural exponential family given the constantly correlated covariance matrix. The proposed distribution can represent an independent bivariate gamma distribution as a special case. In order to derive the distribution we utilize an integrating factor method to satisfy the integrability condition of the quasi-score function. The derived distribution becomes a mixture of discrete and absolute continuous distributions. The proposal of our new bivariate distribution will make it possible to develop some bivariate generalized linear models. This study presents analysis of the impact of “official product” sports sponsorships with the National Football League (NFL),
Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Hockey League (NHL), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and the Professional
Golfers Association (PGA) on the stock prices of sponsoring firms. The primary finding of the study is that, in the main,
announcements were accompanied by increases in shareholder wealth. The 53 sponsors analyzed experienced mean increases in
stock valuations of about $257 million. A multiple regression analysis of firm-specific stock price changes and selected corporate
and sponsorship attributes indicates that official product sponsorships with the NBA, NHL, and PGA and those with smaller
market shares were associated with the largest gains in share prices. Although corporate cashflow (a proxy for agency conflicts)
is statistically unrelated to shareholder approval, sponsorships by high-technology companies were associated with stronger
stock price reactions than otherwise. Finally, product congruence with the sponsored sport was positively related to changes
in stock prices.

the University of Queensland, Australia. She was formerly Professor of Marketing in the Fogelman College of Business and Economics
at the University of Memphis. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Texas. Her research focuses on promotion and consumer
behavior, especially with regard to international and public policy issues. Other articles on the topic of sponsorship-linked
marketing have recently appeared in theJournal of Advertising, the Journal of Advertising Research, theJournal of Business Research, andPsychology & Marketing.
Stephen W. Pruitt (pruittst@umkc.edu) is the holder of the Arvin Gottlieb/Missouri Endowed Chair of Business Economics and Finance in the Henry
W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He received his Ph.D. from
Florida State University. He has published more than 45 articles, most of which employ event study methodologies, in journals
such as theJournal of Finance, theJournal of Political Economy, Financial Management, theJournal of Public Policy and Marketing, and theJournal of Advertising Research.
John M. Clark (clarkj@cba.usm.edu) is an assistant professor of finance at the University of Southern Mississippi. He received his Ph.D.
from the University of Alabama. His research interests include options and other derivatives, investments, and the impact
