The gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GBLT) sports industry has grown substantially over the last few decades. A major change occurred in this field in 2004, after the Montréal 2006 Gay Games organizing committee could not resolve its conflict with the Federation of Gay Games. We examined how such conflicts begin, get resolved, and influence organizational fields using the concept of institutional conflict. We focused on two types of conflicts: contradictions between organizational identity and image of GLBT sport associations, and struggles for governance and institutional leadership within the field of GLBT sport. We found that conflicts between individuals and groups are often the result of conflicts between organizing principles and governance arrangements. Copyright © 2010 ASAC. Through Canadian publicly traded companies, this study assessed how combining firms' continuous valuations by the market (structural model) with the value given in their financial statements (accounting model) could enhance prediction of a company's probability of default. The hybrid model outperformed other models. Specifically, estimated structural probabilities of default (PDs) contributed significantly to predicting default probabilities when they were included alongside accounting and macroeconomic variables in our hybrid model. These results were obtained with two versions of the structural model: the Merton model (Merton, 1973, 1974) and the default barrier model (Brockman & Turtle, 2003). The rapid, pervasive growth of Internet use for business purposes has had a noticeable effect on numerous firms' business strategies. This type of perturbation among competitors results in a more dynamic market. To be successful in such a market often requires a firm to reexamine how it competes. In recent years, two strategic management theories—the resource-based view (RBV) and the dynamic capabilities theory (DCT)—have been advanced by proponents as being the key to developing successful competitive advantage. We argue that the DCT is a logical extension of the RBV. Operationalization has been a critical issue for both theories, and this paper fills a gap in the literature by offering a method of operationalizing dynamic capabilities. Copyright © 2009 ASAC. This study investigated residents’ perceptions of tourism’s impact on communities. Data were collected via a statewide survey, using social exchange theory; results suggest residents recognize many positive and negative consequences. Those who feel tourism is important for economic development, benefit from it, and are knowledgeable about the greater positive impacts, but do not differ from others with respect to perceptions of tourism’s negative consequences. It is becoming clear that broad-based education and awareness campaigns may be a step toward increased understanding of the industry and, ultimately, greater support of the benefits to a community.  相似文献

We examined CEO attributes, board composition, and ownership structure for their relationship to the share performance of the acquiring company around the acquisition announcement. Based on 273 acquisitions by Canadian firms from 1998 through 2002, we have shown that the levels of CEO and director ownership as well as the level of board independence were positively associated with the short‐term financial performance of the acquirer. Board size was negatively related to value creation. Finally, cash‐based deals and cross‐border transactions were also positively related to increases in shareholder wealth for the acquirer. The spatial oligopoly model has been proposed as a method of explaining behavior in food markets, particularly in response to retail food price reporting systems. This paper presents an analysis of the effects of price reporting in experimental spatial duopoly markets with controlled buyer behavior. The experiments are designed to evaluate the impact of a changed information flow on the price decisions of oligopolistic sellers. The short-run theoretical predictions of the spatial model are largely consistent with experimental market results. Thus, the spatial oligopoly model is not rejected as an explanation of seller response to changed price information Rows.
Le modéle oligopolistique spatial a déjà été proposé pour expliquer le comportement des marches alimentaires, tel que déterminé en particulier par les systémes d'inforrnation sur les prix au detail des aliments. Nous présentons une analyse des effets du systéme d'information sur les prix dans des marches duopolistiques spatiaux expérmentaux dans lesquels le comportement des acheteurs est contrôle. Ces expériences sont conpes pour évaluer I'incidence d'un changement dans la transmission des informations sur les décisions des vendeurs oligopolistiques concernant les prix. Les prévisions théoriques a court terme du modele spatial sont largement en accord avec les rksultats experimentaux. Firm performance is a major concern for all organizations and involves a multitude of antecedents. Reducing environmental uncertainty and dependency through the use of strategic actions in the resource dependency theory (RDT) framework and enhancing work practices through high performance work systems (HPWS) lead to higher levels of firm performance. We reveal the interconnectivity between RDT and HPWS and develop propositions as to how components of HPWS positively moderate the relationship between firm performance and the environmental uncertainty‐reducing strategic actions proposed by RDT such as mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, boards of directors, political action, and executive succession. Prospective accounting recruits are increasingly diverse. Drawing on a theoretical framework that combines legitimacy theory, impression management, and institutional logics, we use content analysis to examine how the eight largest Canadian accounting firms refer to diversity in their recruitment websites. Our analysis reveals accounting firms adopt multiple institutional logics and various impression management strategies to enhance legitimacy in the eyes of prospective diversity‐sensitive employees. We find four “Ps” of diversity‐related institutional logics—protect, profit, profess, and promote—all of which are at play in accounting firms' websites. Drawing on agency theory, we explore how 30 employees defined ownership effectiveness in a 100 % employee‐owned Canadian‐based firm. Using a qualitative case‐study, remarkable similarities were found in the factors employees themselves believed contributed most to ownership effectiveness. Despite differences in job roles, employees emphasized confidence in the ownership program, participative decision‐making, ownership identity, and their organization as a family unit. In light of these findings, we discuss how a broader conceptualization of employee ownership effectiveness can be applied for a more comprehensive understanding of how such programs may develop and manifest.
