Abstract

Social exchange theory and notions of reciprocity have long been assumed to explain the relationship between psychological contract breach and important employee outcomes. To date, however, there has been no explicit testing of these assumptions. This research, therefore, explores the mediating role of negative, generalized, and balanced reciprocity, in the relationships between psychological contract breach and employees’ affective organizational commitment and turnover intentions. A survey of 247 Pakistani employees of a large public university was analyzed using structural equation modeling and bootstrapping techniques, and provided excellent support for our model. As predicted, psychological contract breach was positively related to negative reciprocity norms and negatively related to generalized and balanced reciprocity norms. Negative and generalized (but not balanced) reciprocity were negatively and positively (respectively) related to employees’ affective organizational commitment and fully mediated the relationship between psychological contract breach and affective organizational commitment. Moreover, affective organizational commitment fully mediated the relationship between generalized and negative reciprocity and employees’ turnover intentions. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.  相似文献

This article reports the results of an empirical case study of the antecedents of organizational identification among local managers in a multinational corporation (MNC). Organizational identification, which refers to an individual's psychological attachment to the organization, has gained increasing attention because of its assumed link with behaviour associated with enhanced organizational performance. Yet little work has been done on what fosters organizational identification, particularly within the context of a MNC. Moreover, there is empirical evidence showing that managerial employees of MNCs draw a distinction between their local subsidiary and the global organization as manifest in separate group identifications. This suggests that there may be differential sets of antecedents of identification with the local subsidiary and with the global organization. The results of the present study indicate that there are different sets of factors that promote identification with the local and global levels of the organization. The results further show a complementarity of causal variables; identification with the local subsidiary is fostered primarily by factors which pertain to the local company context, while identification with the global organization is fostered primarily by factors which pertain to the MNC as a global entity.  相似文献

In this study, we have used qualitative data from land-use conflicts for a development-related infrastructure project based on the case of Chotiari reservoir in Pakistan. Our results primarily highlight the networks of stakeholders involved in making the decisions for this project and their opposition to the desires of the local population, leading to significant tensions and conflicts due to the superposition of land-use expectations in the project area. Through this research, we have identified the key groups of actors and their logics, links and behaviors in terms of multi-level governance (from community level to international level) and territorial governance, thus revealing the positions of stakeholders and their relative social power. We show how public authorities have disregarded international rules and laws in undertaking a development project, and caused great damage to local populations and environmental resources. This article aims to provide useful information and insights for recommendations to help prevent and resolve land-use conflicts, principally on the basis of an analysis of proximity relations.  相似文献

Pakistan’s banking industry has gone through significant transformation from being in a heavily state regulated and controlled environment to a more liberalized market structure in recent years. This liberalization of banking industry in Pakistan has raised concerns over the dominant banks’ exercise of market power on account of increase in market concentration due to mergers and acquisitions, high profitability in banking sector and increasing interest rate spread. Present study therefore explicitly tests the market conduct of banks using quarterly panel data of 30 banks from 2004 to 2012 and employing Panzar–Rosse, Bresnahan–Lau, Hall–Roeger and Boone’s approaches to study market power. Our findings suggest that Pakistan’s banking industry is working in a competitive environment and we find little evidence for the exercise of market power by the dominant banks. Our results remain robust across all these approaches to measure market power. These findings indicate that the liberalization and deregulation of Pakistan’s banking industry has been successful in improving the competitive conditions in the market.  相似文献

This article attempts to contribute to the literature by carefully documenting home‐based work in four sectors in Pakistan in a value chain context. We attempt to isolate and compare the unit remuneration of workers relative to unit value added at the lowest tier of the chain as a measure of income share. In Pakistan, weeds are a serious problem for the cotton–wheat cropping system, and they are causing even more damage than insects. The damage caused by weeds varies in the range of 15–30 percent. Farmers in Pakistan carry out several practices to control weeds, including hoeing, herbicide application and crop rotation. Farmers integrate different weed management practices; hence, in the present study, the multivariate probit model is used in an analysis of cotton farmers' joint decision‐making. The propensity score matching results indicate that farmers adopting integrating weed management practices have higher demand for labor, higher yields, higher household income and higher net returns from the cotton crop.  相似文献

The local adaptation of Western HR concepts in more traditional societies is an important topic for international HRM research and practice. We analyze the role of Vartan Bhanji, a traditional notion constituting and governing local social networks, when implementing such concepts in the Pakistani context. Based on a detailed case study of a privatized hospital, our analysis shows that Vartan Bhanji is both supporting and limiting Western HRM practices, in particular recruitment and selection, appraisal, compensation and promotion. The study reduces the knowledge gap for Pakistan, a country underrepresented in the international HRM discourse; illustrates the role of traditional social networks in companies using Western HRM concepts and supports calls for contextualizing HRM practices and research.  相似文献

Abstract

Data on crop production are assembled for four provinces—Punjab, Sindh, North-West Frontier Province and Balochistan—for the period from 1980/81 to 2005/06 to examine inter-provincial differences in productivity growth rates. Propositions are put forward and examined to explain the superior productivity performance of Punjabi crop producers over those in Sindh and North-West Frontier Province, and the unusual productivity trends in Balochistan. The major factors relate to economic infrastructure and human capital. The impact of agricultural research is difficult to discern, and further work is required to assess the lagged effects of research expenditures on TFP growth.

Explication des déséquilibres interprovinciaux dans l'augmentation de la productivité dans la production de cultures au Pakistan

RÉSUMÉ On a rassemblé des données pour les quatre provinces suivantes: Penjab, Sindh, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, et Baloutchistan, pour la période 1980/81 à 2005/06, afin d'examiner les différences interprovinciales dans les taux d'expansion de la productivité. On présente et on examine des hypothèses pour expliquer le rendement supérieur des producteurs du Penjab par rapport à ceux du Sindh et du Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, ainsi que les tendances de productivité inhabituelles du Baloutchistan. Les principaux facteurs se rapportent à l'infrastructure économique et au capital humain. L'impact de la recherche sur l'agriculture est difficile à établir, et des travaux supplémentaires seront nécessaires pour évaluer les effets décalés des frais de recherche sur l'expansion du TFP.

Explicación de la desigualdad inter-provincial en el crecimiento de la productividad de la producción de cultivos en Pakistán

EXTRACTO Se recopilan datos sobre la producción de cultivos de cuatro provincias: Punjab, Sindh, Provincia de la Frontera Norte-Oeste y Balochistan, durante el período de 1980/81 a 2005/06, para examinar las diferencias inter-provinciales en los índices de crecimiento de la productividad. Se plantean y examinan propuestas para explicar el mayor rendimiento de la productividad de los productores de cultivos Punjabi con respecto a los de Sindh y la Provincia de la Frontera Norte-Oeste, y las inusuales tendencias de la productividad de Balochistan. Los factores principales se relacionan con la infraestructura económica y el capital humano. El impacto de la investigación agrícola es difícil de discernir, y se requiere más trabajo para evaluar los efectos retrasados de los gastos de investigación en el crecimiento TFP.   相似文献

Highway Work Zones (HWZs) present a major hazard for road users, construction workers and equipment, and significantly contribute to occurrence of road crashes worldwide. The present study focuses on analysing the current state of safety measures at HWZs in Pakistan. A more direct approach is adopted by comparing safety measures at randomly selected HWZs in Pakistan with well-established safety procedures in Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). HWZ safety measures such as traffic signs, markings, safety measures for pedestrians, workers and construction machinery, police enforcement, speed control measures, provision of advance warning area, buffer spaces, transition areas, and tapers for eight different HWZs were studied and compared with MUTCD standards. The results revealed that majority of the HWZs in Pakistan do not conform to any standard layout especially for safety and speed control measures. An enhanced need for special efforts towards improving safety at HWZs in Pakistan is highlighted.  相似文献
