This Note questions the statistical validity of the analysesof the relationship between the rate of profit and the organiccomposition across industries.     

Household composition and food expenditures: a cross-country comparison

In the analysis of food expenditures, use of household member counts as an explanatory variable assumes each member has the same marginal food expenditure impact. In our analysis of Latin American food expenditures we reject this assumption via the estimation of endogenously determined adult equivalence scales that vary by household member gender and age. A series of hypothesis tests indicate significant differences not only in the male versus female equivalence scales but also across country. With the use of such equivalence scales in the definition of per capita expenditures we find significant differences in the distributions implying substantially different poverty rankings.

A performance measure for mutual funds using the Connor-Korajczyk methodology: An empirical study

This article examines the performance of a sample of bond, stock, and balanced funds. Close attention is paid to the bond versus equity composition of the mutual funds and how this asset composition affects the performance measure. This research includes the period from January 1977 through March 1984. The results of the analysis show that none of these mutual funds categories has outperformed the market. Fund managers in this sample are unable to predict security prices consistently to warrant the associated costs. In addition, the “goodness of fit” varied significantly between the types of funds examined.     

Board Composition in New Zealand: An Agency Perspective

This paper looks at board composition determinants in New Zealand. We document that the proportion of outside board members is inversely related to insider equity ownership supporting the notion that these variables are substitute mechanisms in controlling agency problems. We also find that board composition is directly related to debt, ownership concentration, and profitability and inversely related to growth and firm size. There is evidence that firms with influential CEOs have lower outside board representation. Finally, we document that the passage of the legislation reforming company and securities laws in 1993 was associated with increased outside members on the board.     

The Ideal Index and Practical Index of NPVR＆IRR Independent Project Scheduling Solution

The technique of efficiency index scheduling is an easy way to solve the optimum composition of independent investment projects. B/C, N/K, NPVR （net present value ratio） and IRR （internal rate of return） are usually used to estimate the efficiency of the project. This paper is to point out the B/C and IRR indexes, but it can＇t make sure the correctness of scheduling. The ideal index of scheduling is NPVR. When MARR （Minimum Attractive Rate of Return） is uncertain, IRR is the practicable index of scheduling.     

Lexicographic composition of simple games

Certain voting bodies can be modeled as a simple game where a coalition's winning depends on whether it wins, blocks or loses in two smaller simple games. There are essentially five such ways to combine two proper games into a proper game. The most decisive is the lexicographic rule, where a coalition must either win in G₁, or block in G₁ and win in G₂. When two isomorphic games are combined lexicographically, a given role for a player confers equal or more power when held in the first game than the second, if power is assessed by any semi-value. A game is lexicographically separable when the players of the two components partition the whole set. Games with veto players are not separable, and games of two or more players with identical roles are separable only if decisive. Some separable games are egalitarian in that they give players identical roles.     

中国省际综合交通发展水平的定量分析

首先选取2005年全国30个省、市、自治区的5个交通运输指标(国家铁路长度,内河航道长度,公路长度以及反映各运输方式灵活度及运送量的货运总量和货物周转5个指标),应用SPSS统计软件对此进行了主成分分析;然后利用聚类分析方法得到了全国综合交通发展水平的区域谱系图;最后在此基础上,探讨了全国省际综合发展水平的区域相似性和差异性。研究结果表明该方法不仅可以克服传统的基于人工选用指标进行综合分析所存在的数据不易处理的缺陷,而且结果准确性高,是对中国交通发展水平进行定量分析的一种新尝试。
