The responsibilities of a semistructured interviewer

Despite the fact that semistructured interviewing in business research can trace its roots all the way back to the Hawthorne studies, the guidance for practitioners in the literature remains sparse. This article deals with what responsibilities a researcher ought to shoulder in carrying out this unpredictable exploration in the field. The tradeoffs and the dilemmas that must be confronted in this research design are discussed, and four cases are used as illustrations. Based on the author's nine years of field experience, ethical procedures are put forth with regard to gaining both organizational and individual consent, establishing respondents' positions and their justifications, and responsibly reporting the results. The analysis reveals that these ethical procedures are not just passive safeguards; rather, they serve an integral role in the process of producing valid and useful research.

产业结构市场有效性原理是评价产业结构的一种新方法。本文以湖北省为例,运用产业结构市场有效性原理验证了产业结构市场有效性程度和产业结构相似程度无关的命题。     

不同省域科研投入产出效率及其影响因素的实证研究

本文使用我国30个省2003~2008年省级面板数据对科研投入产出效率进行了测算与比较研究。结果发现,我国科研投入产出效率存在明显的地区差异性;大部分地区的科研投入产出效率呈现先下降、后上升的特征,其拐点出现于2004~2005年间;各地区都不同程度地存在投入冗余或产出不足;科研活动市场化程度、基础研究投入强度、产学研结合程度、科技人员投入对科研投入产出效率均有显著的正向影响作用,各指标每上升1%,其效率将分别增长0.39%、1.01%、0.31%和16%,但科技经费投入对效率的影响不显著。     

苏南地区物流企业生态效益评价体系研究

物流企业不仅要追求经济效益和社会效益,也要重视生态效益,发展绿色物流。通过对苏南地区物流企业分类及现有评估标准的分析,阐述物流企业生态效益评价的必要性,基于物流企业在货物包装、运输、储存等环节影响生态环境的因素分析,运用问卷调查法和李科特五分量表法,创建了物流企业生态效益评价指标并进行指标内容的效度检验,通过层次分析法和模糊综合评判理论进一步构建指标体系的评价模型,结合具体物流企业加以评估,以此促进企业、社会和经济的可持续发展。

The predictive validity of the Karnani and Wernerfelt model of multipoint competition

This study is the first to examine the predictive validity of the Karnani and Wernerfelt theoretical model. We developed measures for four variables, and explored whether they successfully operationalized the dimensions in the theoretical model. The model proposed four response strategies, and six were observed in the data. Incumbent firms most frequently did not respond at all to another firm's entry, even though a counterattack response was predicted by the model. Since the independent variables did not predict responses as proposed by the model, exploratory analyses identified “best” predictors of responses.     

Does the Measurement of Property and Structural Characteristics Affect Estimated Implicit Prices for Environmental Amenities in a Hedonic Model?

Hedonic models are commonly used to estimate marginal willingness to pay for environmental amenities. These studies utilize variables that are assumed to be measured without error (such as the square footage of the lot or the number of bedrooms) and proxy variables (such as neighborhood or school quality). Lot and structural characteristics may in fact be measured with error. Potential sources of error include inaccurate measures and inconsistent updating. We investigate the effect of using tax-assessor data versus survey data from purchasers to estimate the implicit price of an environmental amenity, lake-water clarity. Convergent validity of the implicit price for water clarity is established if the town and survey data provide statistically indistinguishable estimates of implicit prices for this amenity. Overall, the town-office and survey data on property characteristics were not statistically different in three of the four market groupings examined, which suggests that the traditional municipal sources of these data may not contain substantial measurement error. Furthermore, convergent validity is satisfied in all four market areas. However, differences in computed implicit prices of clarity in two of the market areas are large enough that policy decisions for environmental quality could be affected by the source of the lot and structural data.

The problem of ‘parallelism’ or external validitycan in principle be solved; I try to show how by means of twosimple examples. I also criticise attempts to dismiss experimentaleconomics that appeal to alleged ontological differences betweenthe natural and the social realm.
