Exploring the role of the spouse in expatriate failure: a grounded theory-based investigation of expatriate' spouse adjustment issues from India

This paper applied the grounded theory method in a study of the expatriates' spouses' relocation adjustment process and the impact of such adjustment problems in expatriate failure. A qualitative enquiry approach using open-ended questions in the form of personal interviews was adopted. Iteratively, the questions were changed to reach theoretical saturation and we allowed the respondents to lead us through the data collection process during our eventual theory development process. An action diagram technique was used to help structure and process the data. The study was conducted with 26 Indian origin spouses who had to encounter relocation issues one time or the other. We found the spouses' perceived gender role ideology to play a critical part in their adjustment process. Other factors that influenced the adjustment process in expatriate assignments were personality factors such as extraversion, organizational and family support, country demographics and pre-departure training.

The death of an innovative project: How grief recovery enhances learning

Given the increase in corporate innovative activity, entrepreneurial projects that are created to pursue new and unique opportunities often fail—or “die”—due to the uncertain environment within which they develop. Although failure can be an important source of information for learning, this learning is not automatic or instantaneous. The emotions generated by failure (e.g., grief) can interfere with the learning process. This article highlights explanations of the grief process and how it can be managed by individuals and organizations to enhance learning. Specifically, by using a dual process model for recovering from grief, innovators can learn more from their project failures and remain committed to future innovative endeavors.

从创新失败中学习与成长：真实型领导对员工的激发机理研究

创新活动充满不确定性、风险性和复杂性,创新失败频繁发生。在此背景下,如何激励员工从失败中学习并成长是学者与管理者关注的焦点。基于社会认知理论和社会学习理论,文章构建“领导-员工心理-员工行为”研究框架,重点探究真实型领导对创新失败情境下员工失败学习行为的影响机制。研究发现：真实型领导能有效激发员工失败学习行为;内部人身份感知、员工韧性分别在真实型领导与员工失败学习行为关系间起部分中介作用,并且构成中介链发挥链式中介作用。研究结论不仅拓展了中国情境下员工从失败中学习与成长的研究,而且为企业如何构建从失败中学习的文化氛围,促进员工学习与创新行为提供了理论指导。

Feeding the motherland: grain exports from the Swedish Baltic provinces during the Great Famine of 1696–1697

The research carried out so far has explained the Great Famine of 1696–1697 in the Baltic provinces as a result of the total crop failures in 1695–1696 and an inadequate Swedish economic policy that emptied all the stocks in the provinces through massive grain exports to Finland and Sweden. However, both these views are not consistent with the closer study of the grain exports from the major ports of the Baltic provinces during the famine years. The analysis of Tallinn's customs books shows that the grain exports occurred only on a small scale compared to the normal years, due to the strict ban on grain exports to foreign markets. Furthermore, there is no proof that the markets in the bigger towns lacked available grain in those years. It can also be concluded that the volume of the grain exports was hardly enough to alleviate the famine crisis in Finland or Sweden.
