Relative performance of the grid, nearest neighbor, and OLS estimators

This article provides various paradigms for the grid estimator, the most useful being a representation of the grid estimator as a combination of the nonparametric nearest neighbor estimator and a parametric estimator. Hence, the grid estimator falls into the class of semiparametric estimators. The article used this representation to derive the relative efficiency of the nearest neighbor, grid, and OLS estimators. Under statistically perfect conditions, the OLS estimator dominated the grid estimator, which in turn dominated the nearest neighbor estimator. A Monte Carlo experiment verified the theoretical results. A second Monte Carlo experiment showed the fragility of the OLS superiority to misspecification. The results cast light upon appraisal practice.

The article points out the often neglected political importance of telecommunications planning experts. It does so by first locating policy planning in the larger socletal phenomenon of technocracy. Next discussed is the relationship of policy planners to political power. Finally the article examines some instances of national telecommunications planning, in particular the USA.

Integration of family-owned business succession with turnover and life cycle models: Development of a successor retention process model

Family-owned businesses face a unique obstacle: continuation of the business through intergenerational transfer. Most family-owned businesses cease when the next generation does not enter the business. This paper develops parallels between failed intergenerational transfer and voluntary turnover. Based on past research, we develop a taxonomy of characteristics hypothesized to influence intergenerational transfer in family-owned businesses. We, then, integrate these dimensions with prominent turnover and socialization theories to propose a successor retention process model. Implications for research are described.
