A model for wine list and wine inventory yield management

Fine dining restaurants with extensive wine lists often have high-value wine inventories and low inventory turnover ratios that reduce the owner's return on investment. The restaurant management literature does not provide fine dining restaurant managers with the tools that enable them to evaluate and make changes to wine list selections, pricing and inventory levels in order to improve the returns from the investment in wine inventory. This paper contributes to the literature by drawing concepts from yield management, retail science and menu engineering to develop a yield statistic and analytical model for managing wine list and wine inventory productivity. WINSPID (wine sales per inventory dollar) is the product of wine mark-up and inventory turnover ratio. Graphs of wine sales and inventory data, mark-up and inventory turnover ratio enable the restaurant manager to analyse, improve and monitor the wine list, wine inventory and wine supplier performance.

Abstract This paper is an empirical study of the publication records of communications to a weekly seminar, continued from 1997. We look at the quality of publications, and also at the determinants of publications. Our results offer lessons for both presenters and organizers of research seminars in academia.

Are all dividends created equal? Australian evidence using dividend‐increase track records

Recent research indicates that the signal sent by a dividend change is more powerful for longer histories of unchanged dividends. We study the dividend history of Australian firms to investigate whether the signalling power of a dividend increase varies with the frequency of repetition. We find that the first three consecutive dividend increases are associated with significantly positive abnormal returns, and subsequent increases are generally not significant, even after controlling for the interaction effect with the simultaneously announced earnings information. Our results support the hypothesis that repeating a dividend increase eventually leads to a reputation for further increases and weakens the value of subsequent increases as a means of disseminating management's private information.

Record values from generalized Pareto distribution and associated inference

In this paper, we derive exact explicit expressions for the single, double, triple and quadruple moments of the upper record values from a generalized Pareto distribution. We then use these expressions to compute the mean, variance, and the coefficients of skewness and kurtosis of certain linear functions of record values. Finally, we develop approximate confidence intervals for the location and scale parameters of the generalized Pareto distribution using the Edgeworth approximation and compare them with the intervals constructed through Monte Carlo simulations. On characterizations of distributions by expected values of order statistics and record values with gap

In this paper, we obtain some recurrence relationships for conditional expectations of nonadjacent order statistics and record values when the distribution function is absolutely continuous, and we prove that the distribution function is uniquely determined by the distribution of conditioned record values and by the expected values of these records. Further, different distributions are characterized by these relationships.
