How does the Korean management system work with open interaction and without excessive power abuse, in spite of the emphasis on authority and hierarchy in Korean society? This paper explicates the concept of jeong exchange, an emotional support mechanism based on informal social ties, as the basis of social capital in Korean collectives (woori). Jeong exchange is first described and then contrasted with related concepts in the other major Confucian societies of China and Japan. It is then used to develop the notion of “collective leadership” to describe the nature and process of Korean leadership.  相似文献

This study examines the role of top managers’ values and leadership in advancing environmental sustainability. It also investigates the effects of stakeholder engagement on restaurants’ environmental sustainability and assesses the impact of related practices on restaurant performance. A web-based survey was administered to collect data from top-level restaurant managers in the United States. The sample was selected from panels recruited by a research company specializing in panel surveys. Invitation emails were sent to 2500 managers and 240 responses were returned, 218 of which were retained for final analysis (response rate: 8.7%). Structural equation modeling was used for testing hypothetical relationships among key constructs in the proposed research model: environmental values, leadership, stakeholder engagement, environmental sustainability, and restaurant performance. Findings confirmed the significant role of top management values and leadership in advancing environmental commitment. The results also demonstrated the strong impact of stakeholder engagement on restaurants’ commitment to environmental sustainability. Finally, they indicated the positive influence of restaurants’ environmental sustainability performance on both financial and nonfinancial performance. The study presents a theoretical framework, integrating theories or models from extant literature, and contributes to an enhanced understanding of restaurants’ environmental sustainability. The findings suggest several practical implications for managers in the restaurant industry.  相似文献

Academics often are criticized for doing research that is irrelevant and esoteric. Additionally, the review cycle is lengthy, and even when high quality research is produced, results are unlikely to reach the practitioner for years. Thus, in order to address the needs of both scientists and practitioners, a monthly survey of entrepreneurs was begun. Although the research study topic is how firms grow, the focus of this paper is on the research method used to understand the subject. The paper will lay out the logic for the monthly research process, explain the outcomes of the system, and provide the reader with some early and tentative findings from the ongoing work on how firms grow.  相似文献

The impressive growth in web-mediated organizational relationships has created an escalating interest in how to manage virtual teams successfully. As organizations increasingly expect their managers to lead employees in these online groupings, it becomes imperative to identify and train them in the skills to do this effectively. The purpose of this article is to organize and present strategies that organizations have found successful in helping their managers lead virtual teams. While all successful managers must ensure that they have provided the basic organizational support for their employees, especially effective leaders also ensure they build trustworthy relationships. Recent developments in the leadership literature call for research that emphasizes the role of the follower as well as that of emotion in the leader–member exchange (LMX). In response to these calls, this research examines the relationship between subordinate emotional masking and LMX quality, as well as the mediating role of LMX quality in emotional masking/outcome relationships. We collect data from two samples of MBA students from the United States and China, respectively. In both samples, we find that emotional masking by subordinates is negatively related to LMX quality. The mediating role of LMX quality in the relationship between emotional masking and work-related outcomes is also supported. Suggestions for future research and practice are discussed.  相似文献

Niccolo Machiavelli’s teachings have never gone out of fashion; no doubt because power remains a central aspect of modern political and corporate life. The writings of this 16th century thinker seem as relevant today as they were a half millennium ago. Given the immutable nature of human beings, this is hardly surprising. What is surprising is the regular stream of monographs published in the last third of the 20th century, and reaching a crescendo in the last decade, that argue for Machiavelli’s relevance to modern management and corporate leadership. This essay will examine the structure, assumptions and conclusions of these manuals. After reviewing the manuals, this essay concludes that certain of these assumptions upon which these manuals are based are not transferable from a 16th century principality to a 21st century corporation. Not surprisingly, the teachings of these manuals concerning morality and the corporation are either inconsistent with the actual teachings of Machiavelli, or fail to acknowledge the teachings of Machiavelli most relevant to the modern corporate world. *A substantially modified version of this article was originally presented as a paper at the International Conference on Social Values held at the University of Oxford in July, 2004, and was reprinted in Samuel M. Galie is professor of Political Science and Director of the Raichle Pre-Law Center at Canisius College. He received his PH.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970. He has published numerous articles in the area of state constitutional law, two books entitled The New York State Constitution: A Reference Guide (Greenwood Press, 1991) and Ordered Liberty: A Constitutional History of New York (Fordham University Press, 1996). Professor Galie was selected as the Wilson College Olive Garvey White outstanding teacher in 1967, and was the recipient of the Kenneth L. Koessler Distinguished Professor Award, Canisius College, 1998. Christopher Bopst is an associate in the commercial litigation department at the law firm of Adorno & Yoss LLP in Miami, Florida. He received his B.A. from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York (1995) and his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School in Notre Dame, Indiana (1998). Mr. Bopst has written several articles on state constitutional law and other topics of interest to the legal community. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of gender and ethnicity of Hispanic and Caucasian Gen Y consumers as they impact fashion leadership and shopping enjoyment. Previous research comparing these groups on fashion leadership is limited. Results indicated that differences exist between ethnic groups, between genders, and between genders within the Hispanic group and among Hispanic fashion leaders. In general, Hispanics indicated higher levels of fashion leadership and shopping enjoyment. In addition, the research has implications regarding shopping channels and clothing idea sources among levels of Hispanic fashion leadership.  相似文献
