From spots to themed sites – the evolution of the Protestant Holy Land

Christian theme sites are the latest stage in a process of sanctification of space in which historically embodied Protestant ways of seeing inscribe Protestant understandings on the Holy Land to produce a textualized sacred landscape. After sketching the evolution of Protestant sacred spaces in the Holy Land, attention is focused on two recent Christian theme sites, Nazareth Village and the Biblical Resources Museum. The sites reflect the interaction of contemporary processes, such as the salience of mediatized images, and the increased importance of sensory experiences with Protestant values and habitus. By demonstrating how global flows of tourism are subject to the constraints of religious ways of seeing, the article seeks to broaden understandings of tourism hereto dominated by the image of the hedonist pleasure-seeker.     

会展旅游的网络信息实证分析——以上海世博会为例

近年来,我国会展旅游发展迅速;作为会展旅游典型代表的上海世博会,为其深入发展起到了很好的示范作用。以网络旅游信息为对象,采用计量分析、情感分析等方法,依次分析和探讨了上海世博会的运营现状及其各片区（场馆）的受访状态。研究表明,多数游客能够认同或接受世博资源,且各片区（场馆）因其文化、地域等差异,存在着显著的冷热现象;网络媒体所承载的旅游信息,能够为相关部门有效衡量和评估会展旅游资源提供新的思路或方法。     

Market Segmentation in Time of Crisis

SUMMARY

The MICE sector (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions), has generated high foreign exchange revenue for the economy worldwide. In Thailand, MICE tourists are recognized as 'quality' visitors, mainly because of their high-spending potential. Nonetheless, Thailand's MICE sector has been influenced by a number of crises in the past since September 11, 2001. While a number of researchers have discussed the tourism market segmentation strategies during a crisis situation, less effort has focused on the MICE sector. Using Thailand as a case study, this research has adopted Seaton and Bennett's (1996, p. 31) concept of tourism market segmentation in order to understand the market segmentation strategy implemented by organizations in the MICE sector in time of crisis.

Profitability measurement of UK theme parks: an aggregate approach

Traditionally, financial ratios were used for profitability measurement. This research attempts to apply data envelopment analysis (DEA) to aggregate various financial ratios into a composite profitability index. The research sample includes 13 parks managed by 10 leading theme park operators in the UK. The result first reveals that multi‐site operators are significantly more profitable than their single‐site rivals. Furthermore, the consistency between DEA and ratio analysis indicates that DEA can be used as a good proxy of ratio analysis. It is hoped that this approach can provide new insights about financial measurement not available to managers through ratio analysis. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
