We analyze the relation between volatility and speculative activities in the crude oil futures market and provide short-term forecasts accordingly. By incorporating trading volume and opening interest (speculative ratio) into the volatility dynamics, we document the subtle interaction between the two measures of which the volatility-averse behavior of speculative activities plays a considerable role in the market. Moreover, by accounting for structural changes, we find significant evidence that this behavior currently becomes weaker than in the past, which implies the oil futures market is less informative and/or less risk-averse in recent time period. Our forecasts based on these features perform very well under the predictive preferences that are consistent with the volatility-averse behavior in the oil futures market. In this paper, we propose a component conditional autoregressive range (CCARR) model for forecasting volatility. The proposed CCARR model assumes that the price range comprises both a long-run (trend) component and a short-run (transitory) component, which has the capacity to capture the long memory property of volatility. The model is intuitive and convenient to implement by using the maximum likelihood estimation method. Empirical analysis using six stock market indices highlights the value of incorporating a second component into range (volatility) modelling and forecasting. In particular, we find that the proposed CCARR model fits the data better than the CARR model, and that it generates more accurate out-of-sample volatility forecasts and contains more information content about the true volatility than the popular GARCH, component GARCH and CARR models.  相似文献

This paper studies the asymmetric spillover effect of important economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on the S&P500 index. We use monthly EPU indexes from Australia, Canada, China, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S. and the realized volatility of the U.S. stock market to study the asymmetric pairwise directional spillovers on the U.S. stock market from 2000 to 2019. We find that S&P500 index volatility is a net recipient of spillovers from important EPU indexes. Japanese EPU has the strongest spillover effect on the U.S. stock markets, while EPU from the U.K. plays a very limited role. By decomposing the volatility into good and bad volatility, we find that the relationship between bad stock market volatility and EPU is stronger than between good volatility and EPU. Time-varying spillover characteristics show that bad volatility reacts more strongly to shocks in EPU following the debt crisis and trade negotiations. Several robustness checks are provided to verify the novelty of these findings.  相似文献

Employing the spatial econometric model as well as the complex network theory, this study investigates the spatial spillovers of volatility among G20 stock markets and explores the influential factors of financial risk. To achieve this objective, we use GARCH-BEKK model to construct the volatility network of G20 stock markets, and calculate the Bonacich centrality to capture the most active and influential nodes. Finally, we innovatively use the volatility network matrix as spatial weight matrix and establish spatial Durbin model to measure the direct and spatial spillover effects. We highlight several key observations: there are significant spatial spillover effects in global stock markets; volatility spillover network exists aggregation effects, hierarchical structure and dynamic evolution features; the risk contagion capability of traditional financial power countries falls, while that of “financial small countries” rises; stock market volatility, government debt and inflation are positively correlated with systemic risk, while current account and macroeconomic performance are negatively correlated; the indirect spillover effects of all explanatory variables on systemic risk are greater than the direct spillover effects.  相似文献

The goal of this paper is to explore volatility transmission from various markets to the fine wine market. Knowledge of these channels for transmitting volatility to the wine market allows practitioners to anticipate the future volatility and the consequences of a shock on the wine market, to develop their investment strategy and diversify their risk. We especially analyse the impact of U.S. markets (i.e. art, commodities, credit, financial and real estate) during the 2007–2017 period. We shed additional light on how the volatility of the fine wine market varies during an extended period including a financial crisis. Our results indicate that, in the short-term, volatility is transmitted with a negative effect through the financial and commodity markets and with a positive effect through the art, residential real estate, and credit default markets. In the long-term, the wine market is impacted by all other markets. We show that correlations are time-varying.  相似文献

This research focuses on the impact High-Frequency Trading has on price volatility when bid-ask spread is wide. The theoretical part introduces a set of equations and presents an Agent Based Model implemented via a computer-based simulation. The wide spread leads to the appearance of unusual phenomena caused by the relative speed difference between the fast and slow traders. The latter agents tend to quote limit orders that look irrational, as they are distant more than one tick from the top-of-book. The same relative speed difference causes slow traders to post market orders that execute at price worse than originally intended. Both these abnormal orders tend to increase local volatility. Other results found by the simulation are an increase in global volatility (computed both as the difference of maximum less minimum price and as standard deviation of price distribution) and in volatility at sub-second timescales. These occurrences penalise slower traders and affect market stability. All the results are consistent both under quiet and stressed market conditions. The results found are then compared with audit trail data to verify the soundness of theory against practice.  相似文献

This paper provides the first empirical examination of the Entrepreneurial Wealth Losses (EWL) theory in explaining the global underpricing difference while simultaneously accounting for various clustering effects on the endogenous underwriter-underpricing relationship. We carefully evaluate the effect of clustering in standard errors within years, industries, countries, and developed versus developing countries. Employed here is a large global dataset comprising 10,212 IPO-issuing firms from 22 developed and developing countries between 1995 and 2016. Our 2SLS results provide strong evidence relating the existence of dispersion in underpricing in the global IPO market to the three dimensions of the EWL theory. When the degree of ex-ante uncertainty surrounding the time of offering is high, results show that in countries with a high level of IPO underpricing, issuers sell less secondary shares, create less primary shares, and employ less reputable underwriters. After adjusting for the clustering effect, the EWL model fails in cross-country settings and in developing stock markets while it succeeds in developed ones. This is due to the failure to capture the endogenous underwriter reputation-underpricing relationship. We show how ignoring one- and two-way clustering effects in the IPO data influences results. The validity of the EWL model particularly the statistical significance of the endogenous underwriter reputation-underpricing relationship vanishes based on the way we cluster our standard errors. Instead, we uncover conclusive evidence supporting the spinning behavior rationale where prestigious underwriters in developing equity markets burden IPO firms with a hefty underwriting fee. Sequentially, they leave big amounts of money on the table for investors to cash it out at the expense of issuers. Entrepreneurs in developing nations appear not to be concerned by this spinning practice, because they care little about their wealth losses in exchange for securing successful offering. Policy-wise, the paper provides several practical contributions.  相似文献

We show through extensive Monte Carlo simulations that structural breaks in volatility (volatility shifts) across two independently generated return series cause spurious volatility transmission when estimated with popular bivariate GARCH models. However, using a dummy variable for the induced volatility shift virtually eliminates this bias. We also show that structural breaks in volatility have a substantial impact on the estimated hedge ratios. We confirm our simulation findings using the US stock market data.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the impact of intraday trading activity on option prices in the Volatility Index (VIX) options market. Our results show that there is a temporal relationship between net buying pressure (NBP) and changes in implied volatility of VIX options. Moreover, an increase in NBPs lowers the next-day delta-hedged option returns. Using several measures proxying for limits to arbitrage, the average levels of the implied volatility curve rise when limits to arbitrage are severe. A trading strategy in the VIX futures market constructed by using the NBP generates an average annualized return of 10.09%.  相似文献

文章先是通过理论分析发现金融波动通过影响企业投资项目成功概率的途径来影响投资率的高低。进而基于2001-2015年中国286个地级市数据对金融波动性和投资率之间的关系进行了实证检验。通过分析我们发现:第一,金融波动性与投资率之间负相关。第二,金融波动对投资率的影响呈非线性:随着金融波动剧烈程度的增加,金融波动对投资率的抑制效应逐渐减弱。第三,无论是在东部地区还是在非东部地区,金融波动对投资率的抑制效应都很显著。但是金融波动对投资率的非线性影响在东部地区显著,在非东部地区则不显著,这可能是由东部地区和非东部地区经济发展不平衡所致。  相似文献
