Bidding off the wall in common value auctions

This paper examines the practice of phantom bidding in common value auctions with asymmetric information. Unlike in private value auctions it is very difficult to profit from phantom bidding even if the auctioneer observes the number of interested bidders. We find that the auctioneer is worse off submitting low bids or mixing between his participation strategies. Phantom bidding can generate higher revenues if a single bidder with a high value estimate is likely to be present at the auction. Systematic observation of an isolated high estimate requires negative correlation across bidders’ information that is atypical in a common value environment.

Market information and channel price structure

An analytical model is developed that considers the effect of demand information, and the precision with which demand forecasts are made, on channel profitability. Different channel price structures such as Stackelberg and Vertically integrated are considered and comparisons are made of the impact of information precision on channel profits under each structure. Other demand factors such as brand substitutability and share of base level demand are also included in the analysis, and the interaction of information and demand effects is examined. An empirical study is carried out using a sample of firms based in Hong Kong and support is found for the model propositions.

会计信息反映企业的经营状况帮助管理者做出正确的经济决策。目前出现的会计信息失真现象扰乱了市场经济秩序,诱发经济犯罪,损害了使用者的要权益。应加强对会计信息失真的治理以建立良好的社会经济秩序。     

资产减值、披露格式和信息含量——基于中国资产减值准备明细表的经验证据

2006年我国的企业会计准则不但改变了资产减值的计提和转回的内容,还修改了资产减值的披露格式,即取消了资产减值准备明细表,只要求披露资产减值准备总额。通过对我国2001-2006年的上市公司数据的分析,研究了资产减值的披露格式和信息含量的关系。研究发现,资产减值的明细数据的信息含量显著高于资产减值总额,同时资产减值的各项明细数据的预测能力和解释能力是有差异的。研究结论表明,资产减值的披露格式的改变(即取消资产减值准备明细表)降低了会计报表的信息含量。

Repeated signaling games

I analyze a class of repeated signaling games in which the informed player's type is persistent and the history of actions is perfectly observable. In this context, a large class of possibly complex sequences of signals can be supported as the separating equilibrium actions of the “strong type” of the informed player. I characterize the set of such sequences. I also characterize the sequences of signals in least cost separating equilibria (LCSE) of these games. In doing this, I introduce a state variable that can be interpreted as a measure of reputation. This gives the optimization problem characterizing the LCSE a recursive structure. I show that, in general, the equilibrium path sequences of signals have a simple structure. The shapes of the optimal sequences depend critically on the relative concavities of the payoff functions of different types, which measure the relative preferences towards payoff smoothing.
