This paper details experiences of Spanish tourism migrants in a Costa Brava resort, Lloret de Mar. Employment in these resorts is largely seasonal, “unskilled” with long hours and low pay. Much of the labor force consists of women from rural areas where stable employment is scarce, and for whom migration can bring some improvement in their position in the household and the labor market. Migrants can redefine gender roles and reassess their class position, including attitudes toward unions. However, their immediate employers often operate on low profit margins, and as seasonal workers, tourism migrants are especially vulnerable to down-turns in the industry as well as to pressure from high national unemployment. These influences have hindered union organization. Tourism migration can bring temporary improvement for individual migrants, but has represented no more than a half-way house. Earlier research exploring rural bank entry decisions suggests that market size and its growth seem to be major explanatory
factors. In addition, the role of leading bank holding companies is found to be important in stimulating entry of smaller
rivals. This article finds that credit union entry responds in a similar way, and in addition that the state-level financial
regulatory climate matters. An ordered-probit analysis of credit union numbers yields the intuitive result that credit unions
possess little market power (even in rural markets where they might be expected to play a significant role), and what little
there is can likely be eliminated by a third credit union in the market.

In this paper, we use a gravity model to investigate the extent to which currency barriers explain the border effect puzzle,
i.e. the impact of national borders on international trade. We focus on the two monetary unions of the CFA Franc Zone in West
and Central Africa. We find that these countries display large border effects, and that currency barriers explain between
17 per cent and 28 per cent of the overall border effect.

Recognition of same-sex relationships is receiving increasing national attention in the United States. This paper discusses
the current availability of employee rights in the United States on the basis of marital status to same-sex couples, and both
the direct and indirect economic consequences to organizations of providing such rights. Despite legal recognition in some
states and by many employers in the private sector, the availability of marital rights in the workplace for same-sex couples
remains tenuous, at most. Although the direct economic consequences of same-sex relationships remain a matter of debate, the
indirect economic advantages are several, including being an employer of choice and having a favorable reputation in the consumer,
stockholder, and applicant marketplace. Employers should counterbalance indirect economic benefits with opposition to same-sex

In 1998, the Credit Union Services Corporation Australia Limited (CUSCAL) recommended that Australian credit unions with assets below $5 million should consider merging with larger credit unions. This industry position is at odds with empirical studies, which find little evidence of increasing returns to scale in credit unions. However, an important bias in previous studies of scale economies in credit unions has been the omission of credit union subsidies. This paper shows that the failure to account for subsidies biases the results toward finding diseconomies of scale. After correcting for the subsidy bias, there is very strong evidence of increasing returns to scale in a sample of New South Wales credit unions, supporting the industry recommendation. 相似文献

This paper deals with the effects of international capital mobility on the taxation of labor income and on the size of the public sector. It employs a model of the labor market where national trade unions set the wage level in their country and national governments set the tax rate of a proportional labor-income tax. The tax revenues are used to finance a public good and unemployment benefits. In this model, competition between the national trade unions caused by international capital mobility leads to full employment, and the governments supply the public good on the first best level. As no unemployment benefits have to be financed, the tax on labor income may decline with the introduction of capital mobility. These tax cuts may even overcompensate the unions for the wage decline. 相似文献
