Measuring Inefficiency Via Potential Improvements

In a recent paper Bogetoft and Hougaard (1999) suggest the use of a new potential improvements approach to efficiency evaluation which has the advantage of separating the issue of benchmark selection from the issue of efficiency measurement. In the present paper the potential improvements inefficiency index is reexamined and a DEA-like approach for its determination is suggested. The approach is called Multi-directional Efficiency Analysis (MEA). An empirical example on Danish dairy farms is used for illustrative purposes and comparisons with various versions of DEA.     

Oil,Growth, and Health: What Does the Cross‐Country Evidence Really Show?*

We show that previous results from the body of literature on the resource curse have primarily been driven by the collapse in oil prices during the mid‐1980s. By exploiting cross‐country variations in the size of initial oil endowments and the timing of oil discoveries, we find that there is a stable positive relationship between oil abundance and long‐run economic growth. Using dynamic panel data methods, we also find that there is no evidence that higher oil rents hinder growth. However, to focus on material gain means that the welfare gain from oil is understated, because oil‐rich countries benefit more by the reduction in infant mortality and the gain in longevity. Interestingly, such oil‐led health improvements are more pronounced in non‐democratic countries, where initial heath conditions were poor and oil wealth is concentrated among the ruling elites.

Willingness to Pay for Environmental Improvements in a Large City Evidence from The Spike Model and From a Non-Parametric Approach

In this paper, the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) is applied in order toestimate the social benefits of a set of environmental and urbanimprovements planned for the waterfront of the City of Valencia (Spain) asa consequence of the expansion and restructuring of its trading port. Asthe data show a high rate of zero responses, we applied the Spike model,one of the most recent models in CVM literature, since traditional models(Logit and Probit) are not suitable, given the characteristics of our data.The non-parametric approach is also applied in order to test the validity ofthe Spike model. The results show certain similarities between the Spikemodel and the non-parametric approach.

高职财务会计实践教学之我见

会计实践性教学是指学生通过会计模拟实验或到单位实习等手段,将会计理论知识与实践技能相结合,提高其动手操作能力的教学活动。理想的会计实践性教学是组织学员深入企业及其他单位进行实习,了解会计工作环境并掌握实际操作技能。但是受多种因素的制约,校外实习日趋困难,各学校都加大了校内会计实验室的建设,通过会计模拟实验的办法弥补学生会计学习的不足,学生在模拟实验室中能接触到一些较真实的会计资料,通过自己动手操作,提高感性认识,提高动手操作能力．但其中还存在一些不足。为此．完善财会实践教荤是当备之急．
