Further evidence on the validity of the self typing paragraph approach: Miles and snow strategic archetypes in banking

An analysis of 399 banks self typed as prospectors, analyzers or defenders indicated that the self typing paragraph approach was a useful measurement instrument which has reasonable convergent validity, supporting Shortell and Zajac (1990), and providing further evidence of the value of the self typing paragraph approach in strategy research.

Toward a theory of backpacker personal development: Cross-cultural validation of the BPD scale

This study aims at building a theory of backpacker personal development (BPD) by cross-culturally validating the scale developed by Chen, Bao, and Huang (2014). While the original scale was developed by studying Chinese backpackers, this study focuses on Western backpackers to further validate the scale and advance the studies of backpacker personal development. The study involves two samples in two stages (Study 1, n = 382; Study 2, n = 120) to verify the psychometric properties of the backpacker personal development scale (BPDS). Results show that the five dimensions of the BPDS (i.e., capability, emotion, skill, worldview, and self-consciousness), also apply to Western backpackers; the BPDS demonstrates cross-cultural validity and reliability in measuring backpacker personal development. The current research suggests that Western backpackers see backpacking as a more ‘individualistic’ way of personal development.     

Validity of parent's self-reported responses to home safety questions

The aim of the study was to describe the validity of parent's self-reported responses to questions on home safety practices for children of 2–4 years. A cross-sectional validation study compared parent's self-administered responses to items in the Home Injury Prevention Survey with home observations undertaken by trained researchers. The relationship between the questionnaire and observation results was assessed using percentage agreement, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and intraclass correlation coefficients. Percentage agreements ranged from 44% to 100% with 40 of the total 45 items scoring higher than 70%. Sensitivities ranged from 0% to 100%, with 27 items scoring at least 70%. Specificities also ranged from 0% to 100%, with 33 items scoring at least 70%. As such, the study identified a series of self-administered home safety questions that have sensitivities, specificities and predictive values sufficiently high to allow the information to be useful in research and injury prevention practice.     

ON THE ACCURACY OF CGE FORECASTS IN EXPANSION AND RECESSION: SPAIN 1990–1997

A recursive dynamic disaggregated computable general equilibrium model of the Spanish economy is used to compare the model predictions of endogenous variables with their observed values over the period 1991–1997. It includes 12 producers, 12 households, government and 2 external sectors. There are four types of labour and real wages that depend on unemployment rates. Private investment is determined by private savings and public and external surpluses. Domestic products and imports are imperfect substitutes. All exogenous variables and tax parameters are updated every year with the best available information. The model provides rather accurate predictions in 1991, a normal year, but it underestimates the intensity of the 1992–1993 recession. It also predicts dramatic reversals of trade balances in response to devaluations. These results suggest both that investment savings-driven models provide useful insights in the medium term but underestimate the consequences of downturns, and that Armington's elascitities typically assumed may be too large.

Development of an Approach to the Validation Of Client Assessment Models In Social Services Using a Group Process Support System

This article reports an application of a Group Process Support System to facilitate the validation of a client assessment model used in social services. Various models have been proposed to aid client assessment, but the key to their successful application in practice is the degree of consistency of judgement which results from their use. The article describes an investigation into this aspect of consistency of model application with three groups of care managers within a county council, and in particular discusses a group session process which addresses issues of model validity. This process facilitated the identification of a number of aspects of the model which needed attention in order to achieve a high degree of consistency in application.

Converse trading strategies,intrinsic noise and the stylized facts of financial markets

This paper proposes a simple asset pricing model with three groups of traders: chartists who believe in the persistence of bull and bear markets, fundamentalists who bet on a reduction of the observed mispricing, and investors who follow a buy-and-hold strategy. The innovative feature of the model concerns the frequency of trading: rather than remaining constant over time, each agent in a group is only assumed to become active with a certain probability over a given market period. Depending on the trading strategy, part of this elementary kind of intrinsic noise is additive and another part is multiplicative. Using bootstrap and Monte Carlo methods, it is demonstrated that this combination can contribute to explaining the stylized facts of the daily returns on financial markets, such as volatility clustering, fat tails, and the autocorrelation patterns.
