Misuse of the ‘modified’ t statistic in regulatory telecommunications

Since the enactment of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (1996), extensive expert testimony has justified use of the ‘modified’ t statistic (Brownie et al. Biometrics 46 (1990) 259–266) for performing two-sample hypothesis tests on Bell companies’ CLEC and ILEC performance measurement data. This paper demonstrates how key statistical claims made about the ‘modified’ t in this setting are false, leading not only to incorrect inferences as it currently is being used, but also to the possible undermining of the primary stated objective of the Act—the promotion of competition in the newly deregulated local telephone service markets. A simulation study provides strong evidence for the use of several other easily-implemented statistical procedures in this context; they should be useful in other settings as well.

罗布麻针织物性能测试与研究

随着人们生活水平的提高和对健康理念的逐步深入,对针织产品的舒适性和功能性要求也逐步提高,具有天然抗菌效果的罗布麻纱线被越来越多的应用到针织产品中。本文选取了100%纯罗布麻纱线和其它三种针织产品中常见的纱线——纯棉、纯羊毛和纯腈纶纱线,通过电脑横机以相同的编织参数编织成满针罗纹织物,然后对织物进行面密度、透气性和悬垂性等性能的测试,从而比较罗布麻针织物和其它纱线针织物的各项性能指标。`     

DIC in variable selection

Model comparison is discussed from an information theoretic point of view. In particular the posterior predictive entropy is related to the target yielding DIC and modifications thereof. The adequacy of criteria for posterior predictive model comparison is also investigated depending on the comparison to be made. In particular variable selection as a special problem of model choice is formalized in different ways according to whether the comparison is a comparison across models or within an encompassing model and whether a joint or conditional sampling scheme is applied. DIC has been devised for comparisons across models. Its use in variable selection and that of other criteria is illustrated for a simulated data set.
