Achieving Competitive Advantage Through the Application of Open Systems Theory and the Development of Strategic Alliances: A Guide for Managers of Nonprofit Organizations

ABSTRACT

To effectively compete in today's competitive business environment, nonprofit organizations need to operate as open systems developing strategic alliances with key actors. To help managers of nonprofit organizations develop such relationships, open systems theory is explained, the phrase “strategic alliances” is defined, and a system of alliances is presented as a tool for identifying and analyzing potential relationships.

As a result of the latest transformation, traditional sex role boundaries between the genders began to fade. Over the last half-decade or so advertising itself has increasingly reflected a transposition in sex role portrayals that has come to be labeled as reverse-sexism (Boddewyn, 1991). The conse- quences associated with the emergence of these sex role reversals and the accompanying possibility that men or women may react negatively to their new gender depictions in advertising are ad- dressed in this national study.

Post-Conflict Reconstruction and the Challenge to International Organizations: The Case of El Salvador

Countries in post-conflict transitions have to reconcile the development challenge with the additional burden of reconstruction and national reconciliation. This paper first describes the peculiarities of these countries which make them clearly different from those pursuing normal development. Second is a discussion of the challenges that these transitions pose on the countries involved and on the international organizations that support them. Third, the paper illustrates through a discussion of El Salvador—by all standards a success story—how the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations had to adapt to meet the challenges of post-conflict reconstruction. The paper concludes with some policy recommendations.     

Organizational culture evolution in temporary organizations: The case of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games

We examine organizational culture evolution within a temporary organization, specifically the 2010 Olympic Winter Games organizing committee, by exploring aspects of the work environment. Analysis of organizational artifacts, ethnographic field‐notes, and member‐checking demonstrated that liminal spaces facilitated socialization and cultural crystallization, which in turn assisted members' performance. Organizational structure, socialization, and cultural evolution were parallel processes that impacted each other. The concept of time (i.e., velocity) had a direct influence on subculture crystallization. The paper further integrates stakeholder/client interactions and draws on the role of leadership and cultural infusion mechanisms to demonstrate how culture evolves in temporary organizations. 目前，我国农产品经纪人队伍存在经纪行为不成熟、职业行为不规范、综合素质低、活动资金匮乏等不足，根本原因在于我国农产品经纪人的分散性。农业合作组织是推进农业和农村市场发展的中坚力量之一。依托农业合作组织，有了组织保障，农产品经纪人可以获得开展经济活动的资金；方便从外部和内部进行监督以使经纪活动规范化操作；通过合理的内部利益分配机制，可以促使经纪行为走向成熟；利用合作组织的信息资源，有利于提高经纪人的专业能力和综合素质。     

The development of political skill and political capital by global leaders through global assignments

The purpose of this paper is to explain how developing global leaders through global assignments (i.e. in the form of expatriation and inpatriation) may lead to their acquisition of valuable political skill and political capital. First, using the theoretical frame of political influence theory, the benefit of political skill is explained relative to the development and augmentation of global leaders' capital portfolio during global assignments. Second, a distinction between social capital and political capital, as the integral components of global leader's capital portfolio, is made. In conclusion, the value of acquiring political skill and building human, cultural, social and political capital by global leaders is discussed separately for expatriate and inpatriate assignments.
