Supplier innovativeness, organizational learning styles and manufacturer performance: An empirical assessment

Suppliers have become an increasingly important source of product and process innovation. While case studies have documented how supplier innovation can benefit a manufacturer, this relationship has not been empirically validated, nor have contingencies been explored. Using organizational learning theory we posit that the link between supplier innovativeness and manufacturer performance is moderated by the “fit” between the learning styles of the manufacturer and supplier. We empirically test our hypotheses using hierarchical linear modeling of survey responses from 148 manufacturers concerning 592 suppliers. Results indicate that supplier innovativeness has positive impacts on multiple dimensions of manufacturer performance. Results show that when the outsourced activity involves low levels of design responsibility by the supplier, it is more beneficial for the two partners to have contrasting learning styles. However, when the outsourced activity is design-intensive, it is more beneficial to have a supplier with an explorative learning style.     

Compatibility and unlearning in knowledge transfer in mergers and acquisitions

Despite wide recognition of the central role of knowledge and its transfer, extant research has focused much on some important aspects of knowledge transfer and paid little attention to others. We focus on two underexplored issues in the knowledge transfer literature, namely: (a) compatibility of new knowledge with recipients’ needs, interpretations of its past experiences and its existing norms, and (b) organizational unlearning, which moderates the relationship between compatibility and extent of successful knowledge transfer. We examine different types and dimensions of knowledge compatibility and organizational unlearning within our proposed knowledge transfer process framework. We situate our discussion primarily within knowledge transfer in cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Based on the proposed model, we also offer propositions future research can test.

研究了美国《复苏与再投资法案》关于铁路投资监管的规定中,在铁路投资监管的主体、监管的形式和内容等方面值得借鉴之处,分析总结出中国经济刺激政策实施过程中对铁路投资监管的相应不足之处,结合我国的有关法律和实际情况,提出完善我国铁路投资监管的法律建议,即:在主体方面,应该进一步明确新增中央投资协调小组的职能、权力和运行机制,增加全国人大及其常委会作为铁路投资日常监管的主体,完善媒体和公众监督;在形式和内容方面,在事前监管和事中监管方面予以完善,并且增加新增中央投资协调小组的建议权。
