Wealth and the capitalist spirit

The wealth distribution in the U.S. is more unequal than either the income or earnings distribution, a fact current models of saving behavior have difficulty explaining. Using Max Weber’s [Weber, M. (1905). The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. Charles Scribners’ and Sons (1958 translated edition)] idea that individuals may have a ‘capitalist spirit’, I construct and simulate a model where individuals accumulate wealth for its own sake rather than as deferred consumption. Including capitalist spirit preferences in a simple life cycle model, with no other modifications, generates a skewness of wealth consistent with that observed in the U.S. economy. Furthermore, capitalist spirit preferences provide a way to generate decreasing risk aversion with increases in wealth without resorting to idiosyncratic rates of time preference.

Here come the men in black Technology and anxiety in the postmodern age

This review of the film Men in Black argues that what used to be alarming in the science fiction genre has now become its main source of humour. As a reactionary response to the dystopic X-Files, MiB is an elaborate parody which seeks to recuperate ideological ground lost by the X-Files' examination of gender and technology in contemporary culture. Anxiety about the roles of technology, gender and the state are replaced by humour about the notion of anxiety itself. Anxious we may be at the close of the millenium, but MiB tells us to just laugh it all away.     

客户化供应链下顾客生命周期价值计量研究

在客户化供应链中,顾客资产对企业的生存和发展发挥着至关重要的作用,而目前缺乏对顾客生命周期价值计量的有效探讨。为此,基于客户化供应链的研究背景,在综合现有研究顾客生命周期价值不同成果的基础上获得了顾客生命周期价值计量模型,并针对该模型的不足提出了修正方案,从而获得最终的顾客生命周期价值计量模型,为提高供应链企业顾客资产管理水平,促进供应链企业顾客资产的增值提供计量依据。     

产业集群的人才集聚机制研究

在产业集群的经济增长作用日益突出的今天,集群内的人才集聚现象也越来越受到学者们的关注。文章基于成本收益理论以及人口迁移中的“推－拉理论”等,对产业集群作用下的人才集聚现象进行了分析,并进一步阐述了产业集群内的产业链与人才链的耦合效应以及产业集群生命周期阶段人才集聚的演化过程,得出由于在产业集群的外部经济效应和知识溢出效应等自身诸多特征的作用下人才集聚得以实现,并且产业集群生命周期的不同阶段人才集聚对经济的贡献是有所差异的基本结论。这一结论将会给地方政府在制定区域人才开发政策时提供不同的视角,以便有针对性地遵循产业生命周期阶段来进行人才结构的调整与升级,保证人才集聚的持续性与区域经济的可持续发展。     

Recent and Future Developments Related to “Gdp and Beyond”

Progress of societies? Well‐being of citizens? Trans‐generational impact of policies? To answer such fundamental questions and much more, the European Commission published, in August 2009, its Communication on “GDP and Beyond: Measuring Progress in a Changing World.” Through a co‐operative project, co‐chaired by Eurostat and INSEE (France), the ESS acted decisively and established an action plan to be carried out by 2020 in the context of the European Statistical Programme. This plan which also builds on Eurostat's work on Sustainable Development Indicators. For most of these actions, work has either been accomplished or is in good progress. Further challenges lie ahead, including reconciling macro‐ and micro‐data sources on household economic resources and completing the indicators set on Quality‐of‐Life. The work will also contribute to the global efforts on the Sustainable Development Goals/post‐2015 development agenda.     

西南民族地区城镇适度社会保障水平研究——以贵州省为个案的实证分析

社会保障制度作为社会的最后"安全网"和"自动稳定器"功能已经早在诸多国家的实践中得到充分证明,但是其前提条件是需要建立适度的社会保障水平,社会保障水平过高将导致财政负担过高和个人、企业负担较重;而社会保障水平过低又不能实现其"保基本"的目标。所以,研究社会保障水平的适度性是社会保障研究的重要课题之一。西南民族地区城镇社会保障制度发展缓慢,通过对贵州城镇社会保障水平的适度性进行测度,发现城镇社会保障水平低于理论上适度社会保障水平。需要从经济发展、扩大覆盖面、提高资金使用效率和适度提高社会保障绝对水平等方面入手,以实现西南民族地区城镇社会保障水平与社会经济发展相一致。     

中国寿险公司多元化经营的风险分析

选取新华、国寿、太平、泰康、平安等五家寿险集团公司从2001~2011年每年绩效指标中总资产收益率和净资产收益率的标准差作为度量公司风险的指标,将五家公司的业务线熵指数的均值作为多元化经营的指标进行实证分析。结果表明:多元化经营与寿险公司总资产收益率、净资产收益率的标准差之间存在一定的非线性关系,即多元化经营在一定范围内可以降低ROA和ROE的波动性,但在一定范围内又可能会增大这种波动性。
