This research explores the extent to which VFR travellers utilise commercial accommodation in the Sunshine Coast, Australia, and profiles the characteristics and behaviours of this particular type of VFR traveller. The research indicated that 26% of the VFRs stayed in commercial accommodation (CVFRs). This closely aligned with research using the same method in a comparative destination, Ballarat, Australia, indicating that 22% of VFRs stayed in commercial accommodation. CVFR travellers occupied similar types of commercial accommodation as non‐VFRs and engaged in similar tourism activities. Expert systems are being applied to the performance of tasks in a variety of domains. Some existing systems or prototypes interest hospitality management or related areas.To illustrate both applications that are already available, and perspective applications, a set of expert systems is introduced, developed under the direction of the author, in the domain of recreational activities and of alimentation. Though an important component of commerce and tourism, the accommodation industry has received little economic analysis, particularly in terms of predictive modeling. This paper develops an empirical model of pricing in the lodging industry based on traditional microeconomic price theory. Additionally, three questions are addressed: Do establishments with low occupancy rates tend to raise price to increase revenues, or lower price to increase business? In the United States, the labor force continues to age. As age increases, so does the likeliness of needing disability accommodation. Prior research indicates that people with disabilities often do not request needed accommodations when they assess that others at work would perceive a request as normatively inappropriate. Little, however, is currently known about the impact of age on these assessments. In this study, we integrate prior research on age, disability, social identity, and climate to propose and then test a model of the relationship between requesters’ age and their normative assessments using survey data from 242 people who became hearing impaired prior to entering the workforce. As hypothesized, requester age was negatively associated with normative appropriateness assessment favorability. Moreover, this negative influence was stronger in for‐profit organizational contexts and in workgroup contexts in which the requester lacked a coworker with a disability. Having a coworker with a similar disability also partially mediated the moderating effect of organization type on the association between age and normative appropriateness assessment favorability. The paper describes the rapid recent growth in rural tourism facilities in Spain and attempts to account for the regional variations that exist. The range of activities involved in rural tourism is described and a significant trend towards the development of ‘active’ leisure pursuits in rural areas is identified. This clearly implies a major change in the use of the countryside, albeit in specific locations, but therefore calls into question the assertion of some scholars that rural restructuring is not a feature of contemporary Spain. In assessing the wider impact of rural tourism policies as part of overall rural development, however, it is clear that the main beneficiaries are not necessarily local residents. ABSTRACT

Unsustainable consumption of energy and water by tourist accommodation will escalate if incremental global tourism growth and business-as-usual approaches continue. Guests use more than half of the energy and water at accommodation facilities and so have a partnership role to play in saving resources. Our study is the first to measure the impact of persuasive communication on guests’ resource consumption behaviour (energy and water use) and stay satisfaction. It used an innovative intervention based on interpersonal communication, sequential influence and eco-feedback. Guests’ (n = 759) consumption of electricity, gas and water was monitored at four fully self-contained cottages using smart meters, over a period of 304 days. An ethnographic study, action research and departure survey examined if pro-environmental persuasion could encourage guests to save resources, how guests responded to the intervention and measured whether pro-environmental persuasion affected guest satisfaction. Results show that guests who received the intervention used significantly fewer resources, 80% claimed they tried to save and their overall satisfaction was not negatively affected, while reasons to save/not save were complex. A resource-saving persuasion model is proposed for further research, practitioners are recommended to install pro-environmental infrastructure, train staff to engage customers, and identify responsible channels for fiscal savings.  相似文献

Across the Western World there has been significant expansion in the multi-ownership of tourism accommodation complexes in recent years. Despite this development, this is believed to be the first study to attempt a holistic synthesis of the range of forms and structures that multi-owned tourism accommodation (MOTA) complexes can assume. A spectrum of MOTA types is developed based on the notion that MOTA complexes can exhibit varying degrees of ownership. This synthesis of MOTA types lays the basis for an evaluation of the relative merits of different MOTA types. A commentary is provided concerning the difficulty of quantifying MOTA growth and the nature of challenges that MOTA can present to a range of stakeholders.  相似文献
