Dani Rodrik argues that China's exports are unusually sophisticated for a country at its income level. He also claims that China's export sophistication reflects the government's successful industrial policy and has been instrumental in the recent acceleration of its economic growth. Although Rodrik's interpretation of China's economic growth is broadly correct, the accuracy of his empirical analysis is questionable. In the 1980s a number of large corporations restructured their diversified businesses through divestitures. It is hypothesized that restructuring activity focused on firms at intermediate levels of diversification (e.g., related-linked) which have a mixture of related and unrelated business units. Results confirm this hypothesis which explains that such mixed corporate strategies create organizational and control inefficiencies in managing both related and unrelated types of business units. Restructured firms were also found to move towards two types of different internal capital markets (related and unrelated). Most restructuring firms moved toward lower levels of diversification (e.g., related-constrained), although some moved toward higher levels of diversification (e.g., unrelated business). Also, this study finds restructuring firms that changed their corporate strategy by reducing diversified scope increased their R&D intensity. Firms that restructured and increased their diversified scope decreased R&D intensity. This result suggested a partial substitution between diversification and R&D activity. 相似文献

Actual, not potential, relatedness determines the results of diversification strategies. An external examination of a firm's businesses, products, markets and technologies permits an assessment of potential relatedness among its various businesses. Potential relatedness is, however, often not realized. Also, relatedness may be externally invisible. Hence, actual relatedness may diverge from externally measured potential relatedness. Understanding of business relatedness and performance effects is the foundation of any diversification decision, but we have limited knowledge of how managers consider relatedness. This study identified relatedness classes and performance effects using perceptual survey data from top industrial executives. Four classes with significant variable differences were found: high, technology, customer, and low relatedness. Technology relatedness had a strong positive performance effect and high relatedness had a negative effect. The findings confirm that perceptions are multidimensional, but may include five key factors rather than the previously identified attribute categories of product–markets, resources, and value chains. Recent advances in the theory of credit risk allow the use of standard term structure machinery for default risk modeling and estimation. The empirical literature in this area often interprets the drift adjustments of the default intensity's diffusion state variables as the only default risk premium. We show that this interpretation implies a restriction on the form of possible default risk premia, which can be justified through exact and approximate notions of "diversifiable default risk." The equivalence between the empirical and martingale default intensities that follows from diversifiable default risk greatly facilitates the pricing and management of credit risk. We emphasize that this is not an equivalence in distribution, and illustrate its importance using credit spread dynamics estimated in Duffee (1999) . We also argue that the assumption of diversifiability is implicitly used in certain existing models of mortgage-backed securities. 相似文献

基于异质性产品价格分解模型,运用联合国UN Comtrade 2003-2016年产品-目的国层面出口数据,考察中国OFDI影响本国出口的质量效应和成本效应。研究发现:中国OFDI显著提升了出口产品质量,并对出口产品成本产生降低作用。从目的国收入看,金融危机前,中国OFDI对出口质量的提升以及对出口产品成本的降低作用,主要通过对高收入和中高收入国家的投资实现;而金融危机后,则主要通过对中低收入国家的投资实现。从产品类型看,中国OFDI显著提高了差异性产品和中间产品的出口质量,并对两类产品的成本产生降低作用;但对同质性产品和最终产品,只对其出口产品成本存在显著降低作用,对出口质量的提升作用不显著。因此,以投资带动贸易仍然是推动中国外贸高质量发展的有效举措。 相似文献

Firms with export operations have internal environments that are often geared toward serving the home market. As a result,
export marketing and other business functions compete for resources, which thus increases the likelihood of conflict between
them. Using survey responses from more than 700 exporting firms, the authors test a model of the antecedents and consequences
of two important interaction variables: exporting’s interfunctional connectedness and conflict. The model explains 52 percent
and 49 percent of variance in exporting connectedness and conflict, respectively. The authors identify the key drivers of
successful interactions as follows: management commitment, organizational training and reward systems, relative functional
identification, centralization, and export employee job satisfaction and commitment. The authors also demonstrate that connectedness
is most critical for export success when export markets are in a state of turbulence, whereas conflict is most detrimental
when the firm’s export environment is stable.
