Microfinance programmes like the Self Help Bank Linkage Program in India have been increasingly promoted for their positive economic impact and the belief that they empower women. However, only a few studies rigorously examine the link between microfinance and women’s empowerment. This article contributes to this discussion by arguing that women’s empowerment takes place when women challenge the existing social norms and culture, to effectively improve their well‐being. It empirically validates this hypothesis by using quasi‐experimental household sample data collected for five states in India for 2000 and 2003. A general model is estimated by employing appropriate techniques to treat the ordinal variables in order to estimate the impact of the Self Help Group (SHG) on women’s empowerment for 2000 and 2003. The results strongly demonstrate that on average, there is a significant increase in the empowerment of women in the SHG members group. No such significant change is observed however, for the members of the control group. The elegance of the result lies in the fact that the group of SHG participants show clear evidence of a significant and higher empowerment, while allowing for the possibility that some members might have been more empowered than others. 相似文献

Persuaded by the observed positive link between the flow of appropriately skilled and trained female talent and female presence
at the upper echelons of management (Plitch, Dow Jones Newswire February 9, 2005), this study has examined current trends on women’s uptake of graduate and executive education programs
in the world’s top 100 business schools and explored the extent to which these business schools promote female studentship
and career advancement. It contributes by providing pioneering research insight, albeit at an exploratory level, into the emerging best practice on this important aspect of business school behavior, an area which
is bound to become increasingly appreciated as more global economic actors wise up to the significant diseconomies inherent
in the under-utilization of female talent, particularly in the developing world. Among the study’s main findings are that
female graduate students averaged 30% in the sample business schools, a figure not achieved by a majority of the elite schools,
including some of the highest ranked. Only 10% of these business schools have a specialist center for developing women business
leaders, and only a third offered women-focused programs or executive education courses, including flextime options. A higher, and increasing, percentage of business schools, however, reported offering fellowships, scholarships or
bursaries to prospective female students, and having affiliations with pro-women external organizations and networks that
typically facilitate career-promoting on-campus events and activities. The implications of the foregoing are discussed, replete
with a call on key stakeholder groups to more actively embrace the challenge of improving the supply of appropriately trained
female talent, or top management prospects. Future research ideas are also suggested. 相似文献

Gender Diversity in the Boardroom and Firm Financial Performance 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The monitoring role performed by the board of directors is an important corporate governance control mechanism, especially
in countries where external mechanisms are less well developed. The gender composition of the board can affect the quality
of this monitoring role and thus the financial performance of the firm. This is part of the “business case” for female participation
on boards, though arguments may also be framed in terms of ethical considerations. While the issue of board gender diversity
has attracted growing research interest in recent years, most empirical results are based on U.S. data. This article adds
to a growing number of non-U.S. studies by investigating the link between the gender diversity of the board and firm financial
performance in Spain, a country which historically has had minimal female participation in the workforce, but which has now
introduced legislation to improve equality of opportunities. We investigate the topic using panel data analysis and find that
gender diversity – as measured by the percentage of women on the board and by the Blau and Shannon indices – has a positive
effect on firm value and that the opposite causal relationship is not significant. Our study suggests that investors in Spain
do not penalise firms which increase their female board membership and that greater gender diversity may generate economic

The restructured globalized economy has provided women with employment opportunities. Globalisation has also meant a shift
towards self-regulation of multinationals as part of the restructuring of the world economy that increases among others things,
flexible employment practices, worsening of labour conditions and lower wages for many women workers around the world. In
this context, as part of the global trend emphasising Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the 1980s, one important development
has been the growth of voluntary Corporate Codes of Conduct to improve labour conditions. This article reviews from a feminist
interdisciplinary perspective the broad academic literature on women workers, covering the more classical debate on women
workers in the industrialization process and entering into women workers in the global supply chains and women workers and
corporate codes of conduct. The main argument is that this research on women workers is crucial to frame the issues of business
ethics and in particular CSR and Codes of Conduct in the context of women in the global political economy. When this crucial
knowledge is ignored, then the ethical policies of the companies also ignore the real situation of the women workers at the
bottom of their supply chains.

ABSTRACTDrawing on the life histories of migrant women entrepreneurs in the Netherlands and Spain, this article explores the influence of transnational trajectories on their social positions and business strategies. A translocational positional approach enables us to research the transnational strategies of women entrepreneurs more effectively in addition to examining the changes in social positions and gendered identities between the country of origin and the country of destination. This approach contributes to scholarship on ‘context’ by offering a transnational gendered dimension in relation to the effects of social, spatial and institutional factors. Our findings demonstrate how female migrant entrepreneurs redefine their social status in different contexts by establishing a business and challenge, contest or comply with gender relations in their transnational entrepreneurial journeys. 相似文献

Smallholder farmers in developing countries encounter multiple barriers in access to inputs and technology, which prevent them from reaping the benefits from market participation. Women farmers face additional constraints due to gender norms that further limit their engagement in productive activities. While collective action has been shown to improve access to markets and economic outcomes for farmers overall, the evidence on the effects of cooperative membership for women smallholders remains limited. We investigate empirically the economic benefits of collective action for women farmers in the honey sector in Ethiopia. Relying on a rich data set on women honey producers, both cooperative members and non‐members, we evaluate the effects of belonging to a cooperative on three outcome variables through coarsened exact matching and regression analysis. Our results indicate that cooperative membership significantly increases the market price and the production quantity and, while the average effect on the share of product marketed is statistically insignificant, significant differences emerge for women with given characteristics. These results are shown to be robust to a number of tests that address biases from selection on observables and unobservables. An analysis of the heterogeneous effects of household membership in multiple groups finds that membership of self‐help groups or farmer associations amplifies the positive outcomes from belonging to a formal cooperative. Finally, qualitative findings derived from the same communities indicate self‐reported improvements in agency and self‐esteem among women members, thus reinforcing the importance of the quantitative findings. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Based on analysis of 23 interviews, this paper examines how social media and online content is implicated in the collective, resistant and transnational media experiences of Black women in Britain. It contributes to scholarship concerning race and the virtual marketplace by examining tensions between the countercultural, communal and commercial qualities of Black women’s online experiences. Drawing upon theorising of the oppositional spectator gaze of Black women, and narratives of technology consumption, we unpack how Black women’s digital activity can enable them to navigate the hegemony of US content, their marginalisation in British mass-media, and situate them within a Black experience that transcends Britain’s borders. Our work illustrates how Black women’s online encounters can be a source of resistance, Black digital commentary and community, as well as being subject to corporate co-optation. We conceptualise such online experiences as being shaped by transnational dimensions of the relationship between race, media and markets. 相似文献
