A secure hash function based on feedback iterative structure

Rapid growth of internet data has created enormous security challenges on authenticity, availability and integrity protection of these outsourced data. Hash function is one of the main solutions to face these challenges. This paper proposes a feedback iterative structure of hash function which utilises the variable feedback to resist attacks. Furthermore, to accelerate message diffusion, two novel modules are designed, one for iteration and the other for truncation. Experimental results show that the proposed hash function can effectively resist existing attacks. Moreover, comparing with other existing hash functions, it displays better on statistical performance, collision resistance and avalanche.     

Economic analysis of spillover effects of an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy for suppression of mango fruit fly in Kenya

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) recently developed and disseminated an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to suppress the invasive oriental fruit fly species Bactrocera dorsalis in mango-growing communities in Africa. While the economic benefits of the strategy in mango production have been established, the cross-commodity benefits have not been assessed, despite evidence of the target fruit fly species’ effect on a wide range of cultivated host crops. Using propensity score matching, we analysed data on 371 households obtained from a survey of an icipe project in Kenya and sought to determine whether applying an IPM strategy for fruit fly had a spillover effect on gross margins. We focused on four alternative cultivated hosts of B. dorsalis, namely avocado, pawpaw, citrus and banana. We found positive and significant cross-commodity spillover effects in respect of employing the IPM strategy for fruit fly targeting pawpaw and citrus, suggesting a wide scope for IPM investment in Kenya and other fruit-producing regions in sub-Saharan Africa.     

Self-orientalism,joke-work and host-tourist relation

Literatures in tourism research have pointed out the hosttourist relationship is co-constituted by tourists and local hosts. It is necessary to attend closely to local people’s tactics and strategies to harness and re-shape effects of tourist encounters. This article is particularly interested in the subtle, covert forms of resistance that nonetheless generate circuits and networks of alternative meanings. In particular, it focuses on contestations over the notion of authenticity. With a study of cultural tourism in Lugu Lake, China, this article contributes to debates over host-tourist relations and contested authenticity by providing a nuanced ethnographic account of day-to-day interactions, engagement and power negotiations between Mosuo and tourists. The study highlights self-orientalism and joke-work as two primary forms of mediated resistance.     

The dynamics of privilege: How employees of a multinational corporation construct and contest the privileging effects of English proficiency

In this article we analyze how privilege is dynamically constructed as well as contested. A positioning analysis of interviews with employees of a multinational organization reveals the construction of a hierarchy of privilege. As this hierarchy is based on English proficiency along with other diversity dimensions, privilege is multifaceted. Furthermore, privilege is also contested. Contesting English-proficiency–related privilege is connected to the speaker's position in the hierarchy of privilege. The analysis shows that both category membership and specific competences and skills cumulate to produce privileging effects, but also the possibilities for contesting privilege. At the same time, although the privilege gained by English proficiency is not invisible and is regularly contested, it is nevertheless silenced by those in advantage.     

Impact of privacy concerns on resistance to smart services: does the ‘Big Brother effect’ matter?

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of the factors that explain consumer resistance to smart services from a privacy perspective. To this end, an exploratory qualitative study and a quantitative study were carried out. 653 French consumers answered an online questionnaire regarding smart services in the banking sector. Structural equation modelling was used to test the conceptual model. The findings show that information privacy, the unauthorised secondary use of personal information and perceived intrusion have an impact on consumer resistance to smart services. Moreover, our research highlights the major role of the ‘Big Brother effect’ as an antecedent to these various privacy concerns.
