Limits to Investment Exhilarationism

The aim of the paper is to understand the limits of an exhilarationist regime from a theoretical point of view. We propose a model where distributive shares are endogenously determined by assuming labor productivity to vary with the level of output/capacity utilization due to economies of scale. With an additional assumption of investment being determined by profit share we have a self-reinforcing interaction between the level of output and distribution of income in this model. Is there a limit to such a cumulative process? Here we analyze this question without relying on exogenous mechanisms such as ``ceiling/floor'' concepts.

Computing the covariance of two Brownian area integrals

We compute the expected product of two correlated Brownian area integrals, a problem that arises in the analysis of a popular sorting algorithm. Along the way we find three different formulas for the expectation of the product of the absolute values of two standard normal random variables with correlation θ . These two formulas are found: (a) via conditioning and the non-central chi-square distribution; (b) via Mehler's formula; (c) by representing the correlated normal random variables in terms of independent normal's and integration using polar coordinates.

The life-length of banknotes*

Abstract With the aid of the Bank's banknote sorting system the issue and subsequent withdrawal of f 25–banknotes on three varieties of paper have been recorded for two-and-a-half years. The aim was to measure the durability of the three paper varieties in circulation. The results of this second trial with f 25–banknotes confirm the statistical model developed previously for the first trial with f 100–banknotes. GRESHAM's Law is equally not applicable, neither to f 25–banknotes nor to f 100–banknotes. A two-parameter gamma distribution fits the cumulative fraction of banknotes withdrawn reasonably well.     

Covariance formulas via marginal martingw

Prenctice and Cai recently introduced and studied the function C defined as the covariance function of the two marginal counting process martingales of a pair of dependent survival times (T₁, T₂ ). They show that the function C together with the marginal distributions determines the joint survival function F of (T₁, T₂ ). In this note we show how the key characterizing equation of Prentice and Cai yields a formula for the covariance of T₁ and T₂ in termsof the marginal mean residual life functions and C. The resulting formula generalizes a formula for the variance of a one-dimensional random variable Tdueto Pyke (1965). We also explore several generalizations of the covariance formula, and obtain a valid k-dimensional version of the Prentice and Cai formula.     

Spatial analysis of the U.S. lodging industry, 1963–1977

Data from the U.S. Department of Commerce Census of Business in 1963, 1972, and 1977 were compared on a state by state basis and by standard metropolitan statistical areas in order to analyze the spatial growth points of the U.S. lodging industry. The results point to major lodging growth areas in the Sunbelt states with central Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada and Hawaii as outstanding nodes of development. Metropolitan lodging growth has taken place in the Sunbelt cities with populations of 100,000 to one million, with above average growth in those cities located in the coastal zone.
